I guess I'm open to suggestions, but here are some of the things I'd like:

- around a 3 inch blade
- something with a reputation of durability
- metal handles (aluminum?)
- smooth action and control upon opening and closing
- strong steel blade that's going to take a beating
- under $125
- purdy

The blade is a little longer than 3 inches but is sounds like you are looking for a Benchmade 940. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Benchmade 94x would be a good option. The Kershaw RAM also sounds like it would work really well, for well under that price.

+1 on the Benchmade 940. Of course I'm biased because this is my favorite all-around knife of all time, but it really is a great design. The aluminum handle is not impervious to chipping, but that's a cosmetic issue and has no impact on performance.

That's a little more than I'm looking to spend, but it does look to be what I'm kinda leaning towards:

This knife is the knife I purchased after extensive research. It replaced a Cold Steel Voyager as an EDC. I stopped carrying the voyager due to a poor handle design and clip. This new EDC is perfect!!! Perfect size, shape, clip, handle, etc.

Steel = Bos heat treated S30V
Warrenty = lifetime
handle = smooth G-10
Size/weight = they have a normal size one and a smaller one. I bought the smaller one and I LOVE IT!!! Thought it may be too small at first, but now I think it is just perfect. Perfect perfect......... perfect. I recommend this knife to any and all!!!!! And it's amazon.com price is

(( Do not link to non-Bladeforums dealers. ))

+1 on the Sage 2. It's $15-20 above your $125 price cap, but other than that it fits your criteria perfectly. The Sage 1 would also be an excellent choice, although it has carbon fiber rather than the metal handles you're looking for.

i can't help thinking that perhaps what you actually need here is a 3" fixed blade.

something along the lines of the ESEE Izula, ESEE3, Becker Necker or Fallkniven WM1 will be tougher than any folding knife

I actually have a Becker Necker, but I'm now looking to fill a spot for a folder in my collection.

These are all great suggestions, guys. I appreciate it. Any other options I'd love to hear about.

Kershaw Blur? I know its got grip inserts, but it is aluminum, and I like the simple looks of it. I don't know if speedsafe qualifies as smooth and in control for opening and closing.

Also, +1 on the 940, you can get it around your price if you look around, and while the blade opening is very smooth, it pretty much flies out when you open it. You gotta pay attention to open it slowly. But it's fine.

How about a Zero Tolerance 350? High quality, rock-solid, and can be purchased for around $100. It meets most of your criteria, though the handles are G-10 with liners. It has a recurve blade too, which some people don't like. I've been EDCing mine for about a year now and have no complaints.
