Recommend a hawk for animal defence

ASharpCanadian
Thanks for the reply. I am actually from Saskatchewan. I didn't post it in this thread but mentioned it in threads in other forums that I was looking for something to carry when I was in a park that would prohibit carrying a firearm. I have my PAL and am waiting for a call from Wholesale Sports saying that my Tikka T3 .223 is in (I went with a .223 over a 22-250 as I am trying to join the army reserve and wanted to shoot a similiar calibre). I don't own a shotgun yet, I knew that you could get shorter barrelled shotguns but I thought the short stock was the deal breaker. Also you spelled Canadian wrong (candiangunnutz.com)...come on! jk

Thanks for the reply and the clarifications.

EVERYONE!
Thanks again for all the tips and replies. I ended up going with a Swamprat Rucki as well as CS Bowie Bushman. I ended up getting a raise yesterday so now I am bidding on a Coal Creek Forge tomahawk. From the pictures it looks like it is going to be too nice to leave the household. Was in talks with Devin from 2hawks too. I really like the Voyageur and the Warbeast so maybe will get one of them if I don't get the CCF.

heheheh fair enough. Well if you dont get the ccf check out zombietools.com or, just check it out for kicks. wolves would fear those for sure! congrats on the rucki, I wish I had an excuse to buy one!

Get the CCF hawk if you can, Steve is a hell of an artist and a great guy to deal with.

If I had a tomahawk in my hand when a bear charged I would throw it away so I could run faster. Get a gun.

Ha ha, right on the mark ZC. There are some scary online videos of bears fighting that helped resolve my delusions that I would be able to do anything other than scream like a girl and fill my pants if I was attacked. The sword and big knife recs have some validity, I guess, for piercing power. I'm imagining that a hawk would bounce/slide right off that thick fur, not even mentioning the thick blubber and bone under that. Having said all that, there is this badass. Read about how he handled a grizzly attack:

Thought I'd show ya'll a Grizzly skull I care for. This poor Bear was a rug up until I bought it for his claws a few years ago. It was apparently shot about 100 years ago ;'''-(
Anyway, this was not a big Bear but their skulls are massive. The nose is almost 3 inches thick, the eyebrow bones and area are 2 1/2 and the skull behind the eyebrows is about 1 1/4 thick. ;-))
I have had many very close encounters with Black Bears, a number of Males and one noteable female with 4 cubs. I was between Mom and 2 of her 4 babies, she was about 12 feet away. I talked calmly to her and she sat down and looked at me like I was crazy ;-)))) tipping her head like a dog does when you talk to them. For the most part Bears are gentle creatures who really don't want encounters with humans. IMO the worst thing you can do is have a dog with you in the bush. The Bear feels threatened, the dog goes after the Bear or visa versa, the dog runs, the Bear whacks you, especially females with cubs. Males who start following are the dangerous ones. You should back away without making direct eye contact, keep trees between you if possible, make yourself look big, grab a big stick, yell at him and most important, look for a steep downhill grade to run down. Anyway, that's my take on Bears for what it's worth;-))

Best regards

I agree. Usually all I see is big bear butt as it runs the other way. A few years ago I was strolling down the trail in the Olympic mountains and I looked to my left to see two bear cubs eating berries, looked to my right to see mom doing same. They couldn't care less that I was there and in spite of all you hear about "dont get between mom and bear cubs" it was fine. Earlier this year we ran into this big boy who thought he could get us off 'his' trail if he just walked straight at us. I did same, made some noise and waved stick and he thought better of it, showed us his behind and made for the brush.

That bear skull looks pretty wierd, honestly if you hadnt labeled it as such I would have called it a bad plaster sculpture.

I couldn't believe what it looked like myself, very strange shape. It's been sitting outside for a couple of years, getting a little pitted.

I think that if there is a skull there, it is covered with plaster by the person (taxidermist, maybe) that prepped the rug.

Listen here buddah! Im from Alberta, I dont know what sissy part of Canada youre from but around here that is not a viable question. if you pay attention to the news you mightve heard about the bloke who, after seeing his dogs get attacked by a mama black bear proceeded to grab a rock and bash its head in. It slit his wrist with claws/teeth but took
off. thats just how we do it- just the other day I fought two hawks and a wolverine. Over an old twinky.

Listen to this man. He knows.

Now, be certain when you buy a tomahawk that it is beautiful, such as was seen in the movie The Patriot. An ugly tomahawk will hardly raise a welt on a crazed rabid blackbear, while a gorgeous weapon will kill neatly. Lets try to be rational about this.

I have a Waki, and congrats on the Ruki! Thing I'd focus on is practice with whatever you take with you to the woods. Train with hawks, your Ruki, your guns, and knives. I successfully fought off two Pitbulls when they attacked my Pitbull, with an ASP Baton. With the baton closed, I hit him in the center of the skull with the mushroom buttcap, all the force concentrated in the rim. He closed his eyes, lowered his head, and ran home.
I would worry that a spiked hawk would get stuck in the first wolf, and you'd be struggling to get it out. I'd also worry that the Ruki would be less effective if the wolf was already attacking you, a knife or pistol would be better in that situation, if you can even get to them.

There's no easy answer, except to carry and practice a long range weapon, a medium range, and a very close quarters weapon. I like to carry a pistol, a big knife/hawk/machete/hatchet, and of course a knife when in the woods. Depends on the activity, location, weather, etc..

Thanks for the reply. I have enough knives that I can choose from. I don't own any ESEEs yet so probably in January I will pick up a 4/5/6 or Junglas. I ended up winning the auction for CCF hawk. Looks like it is going to be too nice to take outside but was cheaper than the 2hawks I was considering.

Hey Matt, I'm embarrassed to say you are right, no damned skull at all ;-((( The only real parts are the teeth and the lower jaw bones. The rest is some kind of plaster or cement. Duhhhhhh ;-)))

Best regards

Hey, that's cool. The only reason I know is that my sister is a crazy person. She works in pathology, and she is quite interested in the anatomy of animals and humans alike. I don't have the stomach to even listen to some of her stories from the lab! Yuck. Anyway, anytime it comes to cleaning game, she "dissects" and proceeds to name and inform us the functions of each part. She's very slow, but I've never seen anyone process game so cleanly...not even close.

I know you said you cant carry a firearm in the parks, but I am a SKS rifle freak/collector, and I know canada still imports nice milsurp russian sks's (import ban in the US
) They are very cheap, have some serious stopping power, and have a bayonet for spearing..... just a thought.

Hey Bro, I'm in Nokomis - Just south of Lanigan. If you're ever in the area shoot me a message if you want to check out my 14" 870's.

Crazy, one of my good friends is from Nokomis. I am currently living in Langenburg, moved here this summer from Saskatoon.

Animatronic Fireman,

You selected some good equipment. Congratulations. I can tell you from experience it doesn't matter what weapon you have in your hand if a griz charges you.
I had a Ruger Redhawk 44 Magnum with bear loads. I was fine until the bear stopped and turned off into the woods. Then my legs wouldn't hold me up and I sweated like I was jogging in 100+ weather. Practice with your weapons and hope you never have to use them for real in the woods.

Thanks for the reply. I am studying for an exam and once I am done I would like to try take a martial arts class, I believe there is a Haidong Gumdo class offered nearby. Luckily I only have to worry about grizzly bears when I leave my province.
