recommend inexpensive Barlow knife?

I have been very lucky ,finding Bladeforum's & in particular this sub forum here. I've met all good people who have all done nothing but help me. Through them,I've met more generous people. It is amazing.

But I see trends & in particular the traditional knives ,things are slow. Years back here there would be at least one custom knife being shown a day, almost,it seemed.

I see guys talking a lot about all grades of knives. But I feel ,when suggesting a first try out to a new guy to our "thing' (the knives) ,it is an injustice to recommend knives from the lower end of the quality scale.

I'm just throwing something out there for you all to consider, when discussing traditional knives here.

The quality of the off shore stuff, these days is amazingly good. I myself use some imported products when I put some handles on blades for people. My bad on my second post to this thread, please accept my apology

The OP will have a nice Barlow to tote,in a few days. A custom hand made one. So I'm sure that he appreciates all the suggestions ,but he is about to embark on actual "field test" mode

Sweet! Nicely done. I hope he comes back and posts a pic of his new knife.

And toss me in with those that should probably apologize, Frank. I do, I didn't mean to stray off the mark.

Robert

I'd like to make a comment here about our 'sport" ,it is a generalized thing...

Not too good at wording things but here goes ....

Someone new to these knives,IMO it is better to start off with higher quality upon first getting into it. Poorer quality can easily turn someone off from the get go ,and they may never return again.

Much like if you decided to get your young son or daughter into fishing. If you skimp on quality for their gear, like the rod & reel,it makes for a less gratifying experience, possibly frustration.

I truly believe that first time experiences will make or break the deal to come back.

I hope you can follow what I am getting at.

Sorry if I offered bad advice earlier in this thead, I shoud have qualified it with "This is only my opinion". I dont post alot on this forum, as I know my knowledge on the topic of traditionals is not as extensive as others here.

I also would recommend a decent quality knife but the thread title indicates (recommend me an Inexpensive Barlow).

Yes I am aware, mearly pointing out though, for someone totally new to these style knives, a touch higher quality would be a good recommendation to get a better feel for what they are like.

I agree, its like when I recommend guitars (I am a long time player and former touring musician) I never recommend a cheap one mainly because they never stay in tune and they are just hard to deal with. I come from the you get what you pay for world.

That is what I like about this sub forum, so many various opinions and tastes but everyone is helpful and has the best intentions.

Very generous of you, VCM3. The spirit that you embody in this act is what keeps me coming back. Despite our transgressions, the OP appears to have achieved his goal. He is getting what sounds like a very high quality barlow about as inexpensively as possible (free). Hopefully we get some pictures to look at soon. Apologies and thanks to Frank for keeping us all in line.

I will definitely post pictures for you guys and I will be visiting this forum regularly. I really appreciate all the help here and VCM3 being so generous. I've been viewing this forum for about a year, but haven't posted that much. I'll have to make a point to change that.

This is great then he can see both ends of the graph. And kindof figure on the $30 to $100. stuff in the middle would be like

I've seen good prices on Queen made Robeson barlows at knife shows. D2 or 1095, same basic design as the Queen Burke small barlow, except not as nice and no wharncliff. That was show prices, could be more or less. Seems like an overlooked knife to me.

If anybody has a lead on where I can find one of these in 1095 I'd appreciate an email or PM. I am very interested in trying out Queen's 1095 offerings. I've been eyeing a Moore Maker 5304 stockman, which is also Queen made with 1095 blades.

As promised, here are photos of the John Lloyd knife that Vincent sent to me. I've been carrying it everyday and have been putting it to use. I whittled a bit too. I love this knife!!
