Recommend me a great tanto folder.

I've decided to pick up a tanto for work and have been looking at basically every folding tanto I can find, but can't seem to find any that are thin, manual flipper, with a straight edge. By thin, I mean .120/3mm or less. The closest I have found are the tanto Grip or mini Grip, or perhaps a Buck Marksman tanto. The cheaper the better as I want a beater knife, but I'm trying to draw the line at AUS-8.

Any suggestions that fit the above requisites would be greatly appreciated. I could have easily passed a couple models over. Looking for any firsthand experience or information. Thanks much.

I just gotta ask, why a tanto over a clip point or drop point ?
There are far more clip or drop point options out there.

The materials I cut are rounded plastic. I often have to cut straps or cut a box open without damaging the contents. In past experience I found the point between the two edge angles to be great at making those shallow cuts, and long straight edges cut those materials better. Most of my knives have a least a bit of belly and they perform somewhat poorly unless they are quite thin width wise, no matter how sharp the edge.

Check out the Cold Steel tanto blades. Pick one you like they have quite a few blade steels, sizes, handle materials etc., but in my opinion they are the best tanto folders for the money.

I had one before and enjoyed it. Not quite thin enough but may work. It isn't a flipper or anything that smooth though.

Not even a tanto, but for synthetic materials and opening packages without damaging contents a spyderco tasman salt 2 hawkbill fully serrated comes to mind. Personally I carry a ladybug salt hawkbill for skinning wire and opening packages, and another larger folder for everything else that doesn't require such a precise cut. Again I know it's not a tanto but for synthetic materials and opening packages I think it's hard to beat a serrated hawkbill

I actually looked at a few wharncliffes that might work as well or better. Might just go back to the new Delica. Thanks for the input.

The CS Pro Lite Tanto is .12 but is 4116 German steel. $30 ish
Kershaw Emerson CQC 7k is .11 but 8Cr14MoV (close to AUS 8). $20 ish

Cold Steel Tuff Lite?

I've got a wharnie Delica that I use at work all the time. Thin, sharp and very good with plastic!

I will prob get the 7k and a wharnie delica. Should satisfy my needs for the most part. Forgot the 7k was so thin. Too bad about the steel though.

Boker Pelican, VG-10 ti 2" subcompact Tanto version of the Urban Trapper.

$65 msrp, so close in price to the Urban Trapper. As such, kinda gone unnoticed and somewhat underappreciated. I've grown to appreciate it's form in a small knife.

I love that thing. Too bad it doesn't have a flipper. Could get used to it I guess.

Hi! I only own one folder with tanto blade profile, so I can only recommend this one :). It doesn’t tick many boxes in terms of your requirements but at least it sports a rather thin blade and has good straight edges. Maybe it’s worth a look. It’s a Extrema Ratio BF2 CT. It doesn’t see a lot of pocket time these days but it’s one of my favourite knife when doing “around the house” chores (small maintenance, gardening, etc.). Very good profile to cut straight, laid down surfaces. I mostly like its sturdy construction (I’ve been beating on this guy quite much), easiness of cleaning, extremely durable coating and deep carry style. Still with me, after all these years. This has been one my first acquisitions of “finer” sport cutlery, dating back 2008/2009, so it also has a kind of “sentimental” value for me :). Good luck with your choice!

That looks surprisingly efficient for an ER.
