I EDC a RAT 1. I love it. Cuts everything, inexpensive, fits in my pocket and my hand perfectly. But this is what I'm looking for:

1. Under $50
2. Made in USA
3. 3-4" blade
4. NO RECURVE
5. Performance similar (if not better!) than Rat 1.

Am I looking at Buck Vantage?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you're basically looking at Buck knives in that price range if the US-made thing is a dealbreaker.

Not US made but a US company, the Spyderco Delica 4 might be able to be found around $50 used. They come up here quite often. While not US made, I can assure you they are just as good as US made knives.

U could always keep an eye on the exchange and wait for a Tenacious to come along in that price range, they seem common enough

Hold off another month and put another $50 in the pot, you'll open up your options to much better materials for a minimal amount more. You just have to keep the "I gotta have it now" monster at bay for a bit longer. In the end you'll be happier. Buy once, cry once, repeat. I'd recommend saving up for a Gayle Bradley 2 at about $120. I hate to recommend sub $50 knives as I think the mini-grips and Delica/Endura series are better values for a bit more money. I know, I've been there and wish I would have held off buying a drawer full of $20-$50 knives to have a few really nice knives I really wanted.

Also check out the Kershaw Link (USA). I'm really liking mine.... and they can be found around $40 online. 420HC steel and blackwash or stonewashed finishes. I just started making Ti scales for them, it makes for and even cooler knife, but the factory alum ones are pretty darn nice too.

Kershaw Blur with tanto blade. With some careful google-fu you can find them for a hair under $50 and I honestly think, given your parameters, you're not gonna find a better USA made folder.

Buck haa good options in the price range, and I think the buck 110 and 20$ 482 are great knives.
some people may tell you to save up and get a knife with better materials, but they're only better if you think they are .
The buck 482 is solid, one hand opening, lightweight , carries deep , has a lanyard hole , and is easy to sharpen but holds an edge adequately for edc.

The Vantage doesn't perform better than the Rat 1. The only thing you gain is US made, but my Avid Vantage went back to Buck as it was terribly off center to begin with and getting it even close to centered resulted in a terribly stiff action. I got China made blades that are better performing. Maybe when I get it back you'll want to buy it ;)

Personally for your money a Kershaw Blur (does have a minor re-curve) from KershawGuy dot com is the way to go. Blems (cosmetic only) are $42

Kershaw Skyline or Link?

+1 for the Skyline.

Its definitely not as HD as the Rat but IMO will out perform it in the duties most of us carry knives for, namely cutting/slicing. I consider it Kershaw's best currently produced knife, period. It just does so many things right...awesome design, great materials for the price, lightweight and slim in the pocket. It also fits all of your criteria.

Okay, a lot of people are recommending you save up for better. I don't entirely disagree ($100 will get you some amazing USA made knives), but I would first think hard about whether you're buying this to have a knife that will stick with you and do everything you ask it to, or whether this is the beginning of the collection sickness.

If your plan is to buy a good, solid USA knife then forget this forum exists until you need a fixed blade or whatever, I strongly recommend the tanto Blur I mentioned earlier. No recurve, USA made, absolute classic design, if you find you dislike the assisted opening you can remove the torsion bar and have a great manual knife, it will hold an edge much better than your RAT but still be easy to sharpen and it's backed by one of the best warranties in the business.

If, however, you're falling into the sickness that permeates this forum, scrape together a little more money, put your loose change in a jar and save up for a Buck 830 Marksman. Realistically, your RAT is going to be a reliable, solid knife that will do everything you should reasonably expect a folder to do. The Marksman is all that, but it's also FUN. Fantastic flipping action, strong and innovative lock that's a blast to play with, very pocket friendly and backed by one of the other best warranties in the business. You won't gain a ton of edge retention over the blur, but you'll gain loads of fidget factor. It's dead easy to spend a night on the couch watching television and endlessly flipping the Marksman.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to stick with the RAT, for now. Maybe I'll just put some Red, White and Blue scales on it! I'm not a collector (yet) so, spending $100+ on a pocket knife never appealed to me when the RAT does everything I need it to. But, it's going to happen.

Seriously, if you're not a collector the Rat is a great knife. If you're feeling unpatriotic put that money towards an Ontario fixed blade for camping, machete for yardwork or even a kitchen knife.

It's very, very easy to overbuy when it comes to knives on this forum. Listen to us for long enough and we'll have you convinced that AUS8 steel is basically just tinfoil, when it's honestly a better steel than most people need.

Hell, I'm seriously considering dropping $70 for custom scales on my Manix 2 XL. Not because ot in any way needs them, but just to make it a little more mine.

Plus one on the link one heck of a knife for the money
