Recommend me a TOUGH, Big folder

BM Skirmish that you're considering (although, when you get it, you probably won't want to keep it in your satchel :D)

If not, SOG or Leatherman multi-tool because, as someone said, your 710 already fits the bill.

Better yet, keep the 710 and add a fixed blade.

Just ran into the REKAT line yesterday.. how are those??? Read some reviews here.. but not very conclusive impressions..

and oh.. btw, StretchNM, I can't legally carry a fixed blade over here... as far as I know...

Does anyone still have the Cuda MAXX bowies anymore? Or did the start making them again? I thougth they ahd become scarce due to the whole strike shutdown issue.

I only mention this because you mentioned that you wanted a "tough, big" folder. Before you decide, you should at least check out a Lonewolf Harsey Tactical (same as the T3 Tactical I'm told). They are in about the same price range as a BM630 on the web. If you are able, don't just look at pics on the web. You have to hold this knife to believe it. Everything that previously seemed overbuilt about my Rukus is totally out-done by these knives. I also have a Lonewolf T2 Ranger with a blade the same length as my BM710s, and it looks like a toy in comparison. The Tactical and T3s have 4.8" CPM-S30V blades that are notably beefier than the 610's .15 inch thick blade and shaving-sharp out of the box. The handle is the same length as the 610. The scales are textured FRN, not G10, but the ergos are good and they seem like you could beat the daylights out them without cracking or breaking, in any conditions - even down to sub-zero temperatures. The knives also come with a well-designed nylon carry "system". Many have seen/held the Rukus, so as a last frame of reference, comparing a 'T3 to a Rukus is like comparing a (real) Hum-Vee to a GMC Suburban.
Just my 2 cents worth...

Thought I read that the Lonewolf had some QC issues?? One problem is that there is no way I can hold a Lonewolf, much less inspect one before buying and as I'm outside the US... sending a defective one back to the seller is almost unthinkable..:(

But you analogy about the Hum-vee is making me seriously curious about this one..

mm.. lots of great responses so far...

keep it coming guys...

If you just want another knife, hey, more power to ya. But from a practical standpoint, I have to agree with AllenC that I don't see an extra inch of folding blade to be that much better than the other knives you'll already have/carry. I'd think something with other tools, or multiple blades, would offer lots more versatility to compliment what's in your other pocket(s).

By the way, where do you live? Bladeforums has members from lots of countries outside the USA; maybe they could give you some tips about laws or places to purchase.

Buck/Strider 880SP. I've carried mine for a couple of years now and it has never flinched at anything I've given it in the way of hard work. I didn't like the thick, "tactical" edge it came with so I reprofiled mine to a finer convexed edge and it does Stirling work whenever I need it to. One friend (another knifey person) on first seeing it described it quite well I think..

"Thats not a bloody knife! It's a tank with a razors edge on it!"

I’m looking for a TOUGH, Big folder (read, blade more than 4 in) for a do-it-all, utility companion that I can bring with me everyday in my bag/satchel etc. Don’t need one handed opening as I don’t anticipate that I will need it for anything that needs to be cut in a hurry… for that I have a smaller 14210 that I EDC.

I would prefer PE but if you have one in mind that is available only in CE, I will also consider.

So far it’s down to the ZT200 or the Skirmish. The Rukus doesn’t really float my boat as I feel that it has too long a handle for the blade length (another thing that I don't like... too long a handle length versus the blade length)

I already have a 710 and 2 custom 110 coming, so there, that disqualifies them.... :)

Any recommendations or thoughts??

Although the Blade is a little less than 4 inches, the ZT 0200 is the most sturdy knife I have ever used. Sharp, Strong, and Comfortable! Check out this thread for some ZT0200 Reviews! http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=434154&page=3

$150 would buy a great, strong fixed blade with sheath. Beats carrying a large folder (710/110) and slightly larger folder.

Almost any fixed blade is tougher and safer for heavy work. I would go with a TAK from Ontario in D-2. The Benchmade Skirmish is a very tough framelock. I really like the look of the Ontario Retribution (love that name), but have not used one. Any of the above should do well.

Gotta second the Ontario Hossum Retribution 1 for about $140 + $10 shipping from the One Stop Knife Shop. I just ordered one and although they are out of stock Keven says they will be shipping in about 2 weeks. This is a big folder with quality steel and micarta handles. I am looking forward to getting it and making it a user.

If you like 'em big then the Retribution I is for you. You'll be knocked out when you first see this monster and after you pick it up in your hand you'll be hooked! It has to be one of the best feeling folders I've ever held, even though I did sand mine down flat and add the pocket clip:D Digdeep, you'll almost swear it is a fixed blade once you open it up. Those .125" thick titanium liners do the trick in giving this knife a solid feel. The liner that locks the blade is stiff, but not unnaturally so, just those thick liners, and it is more of a framelock with full onlays. I was really impressed with the fit and finish as our Italian friends have done an outstanding job when you consider the street price on this knife. That N690Co steel has a razor edge out of the box, at least mine did, and as thick as the blade is, .200" at the tang and along the top half or so, it might not be the best slicer, but a hell of a chopper! I like mine and with the added pocketclip I end up carrying more than I would have if I had to use the sheath and with the sanded down handles slabs it doesn't print all that bad in looser jeans.

OK, hijack of thread is over, now back to the question at hand............

Cool.. looks like many votes for the Ontario.. really piques my curiosity....

I checked it up on the net and that thing is HUGE!!!
