Recommend me my next knife

I haven't checked it yet, warrantee-less knives freak me out a bit. I'll see if there are any bargains. You aren't a harmonica player by any chance, are you?

Just because you buy the knife "used" doesn't mean your warranty is voided, heck, people even buy used guns!

And I'm a guitar player, big blues fan.

Cold Steel Recon 1. Around $40 right now if you know where to look. You will be very happy with it. Recon 1 mini is also an awesome EDC. I have mine in my pocket right now, and my XL model is less than 5 feet away.

It's in the running :) but I already have a delica, and the handle length to cutting edge ratio on the delica and endura are abysmal... Thanks for the suggestion! I read the blog post in it's entirety, it has the wheels turning...

That's just ridiculous. Sure you don't like the way it looks but it's not like it cuts any less well because of it.

I have knives with a nearly 1-1 blade to handle, and ones that are as bad or worse than the Endura. So long as the handle is at least 3", anything more is excess. Long handles make the knife handle weird. Some people like knives that have a small handle where the tip rests in the palm. Everybody likes their own style, pattern, and aesthetics. Don't rag on somebody because they don't like something that you do.

Aesthetics is something else. Performance is another matter entirely. Aesthetics won't make a knife perform abysmally.

"I don't like the looks of it" vs. "abysmal". ;)

If you can find a disco'd Kershaw 1735 Zing, jump on it. Good knife and meets most of your criteria.

Good luck! :)

I own a delica and love it, but it could have another 1/2" of useful blade pretty easily in that handle. If it takes up that much room in the pocket, I'd like more blade.

A poor handle to blade ratio makes it inefficient as an EDC, it takes up room in the pocket that may not be justified by the blade. I would say the delica falls into this category. If you like it, so be it. This is my recommendation though after all.

That you believe that doesn't make it true for the great numbers of delica users and evidenced by the delica being one of Spyderco's best sellers. That's why when I make a post like that, I always qualify it with a statement that it is my experience or my opinion. In your post, you stated it as a fact. You're doing it again now. It would avoid confusion or controversy to qualify subjective statements rather than present them as a fact.

Additionally, you stated that the knife was abysmal because of blade to handle ratio. Knives are for cutting and the delica actually does very well for the task it was designed for. That you personally, might not find it efficient to pocket a knife with a closed length of around 110mm, doesn't make a cutting implement abysmal.

Or instead of the verbal evasion tactics, you could just admit you didn't choose a very good adjective for what you objected to.

Look, the OP can go with or ignore out suggestions. At least he is giving feedback and helping us help him to pick a good knife. Don't rag on him because he wants something that has more perceived value or efficiency. He has a point, the Delicate is not a perfect knife. Many people have said that it is designed like they forgot to add a choil on it. There is all the room, they just didn't do it.

Umm.., you forgot to add "IMO" after that statement. You have a adverb modifying an adjective, and you didn't add "IMO" after it!!! What is this would coming to??? How are people going to know what's fact and what's opinion without "IMO" after a statement???

For the sake of not turning every thread into an argument how about we leave the grammar policing to other forums, and not nit-pick people's opinions or statements(like I'm doing to yours :p).

That being said, the Delica is a great slicer, and an all around great knife(IMO). I don't know if you've had any experience with Spyderco's in general, but handle them if you haven't. I thought they were downright ugly(IMO) until I handled one.., changed my opinion very quickly! The ergo's are great(IMO) on most that I've played with and they tend to fit your hand amazingly(IMO). I've had several and have handled many others. My Millie is, and will continue to be, one of my go-to knives.

enough with the IMO's, lol

I know other's have had less than desirable experiences with them, but I'd still recommend the Buck Vantage line. I have approximately 5 of them at home, and would say all are quality examples with good F&F. Again, handle one if you can to check things like lock-up and centering prior to purchasing it. The Vantage Pro and Avid are my two favorites, but a friend of mine(who's a concrete laborer and uses his knives very hard) loves his Vantage Select that he's been using for over 3 years. The knife is still rock solid today. He makes me sharpen his knives and I always cringe when he asks because I know he's so hard on 'em, but that Vanatage continues to impress both of us. If it can stand up to what he's done to his, I feel confident in recommending them to anyone(provided you get one with good F&F).

The Kershaw Knockout is another solid recommendation. I have one, and thoroughly enjoy it. Kershaw has a lot of other good offerings in the price range too.

Let us know what you decide on!

Kershaw Leek is always my budget recommendation. It's not deep carry, but if you don't mind tip down carry (it has a safety to prevent it from opening) it will ride just as low as a low riding clip. Uses Sandvik steel, slim, lightweight, and easily found anywhere under $65. There's a crap ton of colors available too.

Yup, and I'll admit it freely instead of engaging in verbal gymnastics. :D

Now you're being obstinate. I said the handle length to cutting edge ratio was abysmal. Not the knife. As I noted, I own a delica. I found the clip also didn't carry as low as I would like and I replaced it with a titanium clip from Casey Lynch here on the site. Is that a crime to dislike too? The delica isn't perfect. And are you saying the delica wouldn't be a better knife with an extra 1/2" + of cutting edge in the same handle? I think that is a pretty objective quality, and most would agree a higher blade:handle ratio is better in an EDC application. The delica also wasn't just designed for "cutting", it achieves that as a folding knife, which needs many other qualities to be a good tool.

Thanks for the common sense! but, as I noted in the first post, I already own a delica. I like it, but I don't think an endura will be my next EDC. How robust is the knockout? I'm reeeeally eyeballing it.
