Recommendation: Good hatchet or backpacking axe

There's a sweet looking antique shop in an old barn I'm planning to check out maybe later today, I've looked through a few pawn shops and only thing I found was a big Husky kind of looked like a fire axe but but had a flat back instead of a spike I think for clearing or something it was like a one piece with the fiberglass similar to the fiskars, only $15 and seemed like a lot of axe for the money but a bit large for my purposes.
From the description that sounds like a Pulaski. An excellent tool for certain jobs like fighting forest fires or hacking stumps out of the ground, but definitely not what you're looking for.

Thanks for all the tips, I have felled a few trees and split my fair share of logs in my youth but I'm probably a bit rusty but I get physiological swing aspect from sports etc. I've watched a couple of videos on fitting hafts by whittling with draw knife so I'm a little eager to give it a try. Will post pics and such when I find something I like.
