Recommendation, tough construction worker knife

I would definitely recommend the Cold Steel Recon 1 mini. It's small, but mighty.

It has one of the toughest locks you can get on a folder (if not, THE toughest lock). It's a nice knife. As an added bonus for you, it's not that expensive. They're around $35 so you can afford to get him 2.

No worries on the durability. You can really wail on them and they won't break on you.

Hultafors Heavy Duty. $13 shipped for the knife, $50-$100 to replace the crummy sheath w something a tad more fancy. Or just give him the god awful sheath too ;)

When I hear (I need a knife for construction) can't help but think it needs to be a sharpened pry bar.

But in all actuality a delica should be fine as long as your using it as a knife. I've been using a superblue delica for sometime now and I'm in the construction field (painting/mold remediation) and I have had zero problems with it. I keep lots of tools close bye, pry bar, hammer, vice grips, screwdrivers, razor blade knife, cats paw just to list some of them.

I use my knife to cut, that's about it.

I always have a Swiss Army knife (mechanic) In my pocket also.

Manix 2 by far.anyblade you want.I go spyderedge.the manix 2 is a tough workhorse of a knife.good steel options, tough frame ,great lock ,the offset combo or serrated blade can saw off nail with ease ,cut shingles ,tarp, burlap, chalk board can be used easily with gloves all with the spyderco warranty made in the u.s.a.for under 100$.

Anyone who has ever spent time on a job site that not only do things get lost or dropped all the time, lots of people got sticky fingers. How many times have you passed someone a small simple tool to have it end up permanently in their pocket or tool belt? Take the "construction environment", add to that someone who is not really a knife guy per se, and you have a really bad environment for an $200 + knife. Instead of a Strider, Sebenza, zt300, etc, you'd be better off giving him $300 in cash to take to the casino because it would last longer and at least he could free drinks.

One of the beefier $50 or less knives with run of the mill steel would be a better option. Many have already been stated here. Rat 1, C.S. Voyager-Recon1-Lawman, Avispa, K/E cqc6, Utilitac, Tenacious, Cryo, Vantage, Zancudo, Etc etc. The list could go on and on. These are all good options and there is many more to add to this. Just remember to get him something to keep it sharp and maybe something with orange scales so its a little easier to find if you do drop it.

What?! I'm sorry, but no. You aren't "sawing off nails with ease" or cutting a chalk board up with one of those. I know, I had one. Come on, now.

You've posted some variation of this exact message in like six threads already. I give you an A for enthusiasm, and the SE Manix 2 is a great knife, but let's keep things in perspective here.

Yea so what I will say what I want anf I can easly saw ogf a nail I did many times.you dont like what I post then dont read it.

For 300$, buy him a Leatherman Surge and a DPX Hest fixed blade original.
The Surge is a great heavy-duty MT and the HEST is 1095 made by Rowen. Great sturdy little blade and the little prybar will come in handy
Much better suited for work than an expensive folder, which will wear out quite fast when abused.

Something tells me this guy is a kid so I'll go easy on him maybe he got dropped on his head by his mommy or maybe daddy wasn't there enough I bet he sawed all the nails at his romper room construction site so let him say what he wants it's only fair!

I hope not! My record is..... um, a little "besmirched" already!

I'm glad you got a laugh out of it brother!

Either a kid or someone with a 7th grade education. Thats got to be some of the worst grammar i have ever read. I'm guessing he's on a device that does not have any sort of spell check. Call me judgmental but when i read posts like his, it automatically discredits everything they say. Not everyone has perfect grammar or spelling, but having endless troubles with one and two syllable words is embarrasing.

Well hey, let's not turn this into a bust on this kid thing, because that never ends well for anyone (least of all us!). Swerving back on point, I need to go back through this thread and see if any of the choices I'd list have been presented. I know for one, I'd probably get a succession of cheap hawksbill knives. I worked for a summer with my uncle and we had to break down all manner of stuff, mainly carpet and cardboard, and I went through four of those things from a local fleamarket. It did the trick!

Not to post on topic or anything, but I just noticed that SOG makes "Contractor" knives. At least one is a hawkbill.

No question TOPS Lil Roughneck 3/8 thick of 5160 steel, bomb proof:

This is probably the stoutest (thickest) blade we have ever made. The strength of this 3/8” thick piece of 5160 spring steel is awesome. It is a full tang, covered with canvas Micarta handles.

As the name implies, the ‘Lil Roughneck’ is very much like the hearty guys who do the hard and heavy work on the oil rigs. The term “Roughneck” is now a commonly-known term associated with rough and tumble guys.

The Roughnecks are of strong resolve, hardworking, and they ‘Keep on Truckin.’ With this in mind…this is definitely for a special guy

Ka bar mule, crkt m16, benchmade rift, or go short fixed and get an esee izula. However one of the cheapest knives that I have has continued to impress me, I don't even know the name but it is one of those spyderco byrd knives in all stainless handles and all. Tight solid lock that has never failed and the 8cr13mov steel has held up better than expected. The opening action is a little stiff but this knife is tough and since going into my pocket has stayed. It's light short so no worries when carrying into certain locals and has pro ven easy to get the edge back once dull.

I looked it up it appears to be a meadowlark 2.

Dpx gear make a solid line of fixed blades and their folders are pretty DAMN tough too. Blade size is right in your wheelhouse and for $300 you can get him a fixed and a folder. They should handle whatever is thrown their way rough stuff included
