Recommendations for first fixed blade?

Hello,

I enjoy reading this forum and have an interest in knives, but with an office job don't have a lot of occassion to use them on a regular basis.

I do own a Benchmade Griptillian and the several Leatherman Waves, all of which I love. They seem very high quality and work well. I use the Leatherman often for chores around the house and keep the Benchmade in my car. The serrated blade is great for ripping up cardboard boxes.

I was thinking of getting a fixed blade for a few reasons: (a) just to see what one feels like (b) they are cool and different (c) I might actually use one for household chores or on a camping trip.

In any case, these aren't really rigorous requirements. I basically want something attractive that is of similar quality to the Benchmade. I assume this is possible for less than $100?

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Michael

If you are looking for a large knife I'd go with a Kabar. For a smaller knife I would recomend the Nimravus. In your case I would go with the Nimravus because you like benchmade and because you mentioned camping. If find my kabar (1212) much more intimidating than the Nimravus, if you camp in large spacious campgrounds that wouldn't be a problem but I find when meeting others a kabar always catches peoples attention.

You can find several Bark river knife and tool knives that hoover around your budget. Great quality and they stand behind their product.

If not, why not a becker campanion or BK7? Check em out.

Are you looking to carry the fixed blade at work? If so a utility hideaway might be good. I carry one IWB at the office and it is very low profile.

Another vote for Bark River, super knives for the money. If you want a top notch knife for your first fixed blade , then go with Bark River.

Another Vote for the Benchamade Nimravus. It feels great in the hand. For a larger knife I like Ranger RD6.

How big of a blade do you want? I love my Dozier designed Kaybar. Great steel (1095) and sheath design. Bit much for small jobs though. ;)

SOG Northwest Ranger is well made and useful. Spyderco Temperance fits the hand well and is sturdy.

Fallkniven F1 for a no nonsense, very sturdy and practical user. Nimravus for a more tactical looking slicer and Benchmade Outbounder for a good looking and very versatile, small utility knife. Spyderco Moran if you want a very light super cutter. These are all assuming your are looking for at small to medium knife.

For just your average sort of work, I would like you to check out anything by Muela. They focus on Bowies and Skinning knives, but all of their stuff is pretty nice. You can get some pretty nice handle materials for a very low price from them. And frankly, the handle is just as important as the blade. The latest greatest super steel is worth nothing if you aren't comfortable holding it. They have a very extensive line, and I'm sure you could find something (probably for around $30-$50.)

+1 Fallkniven F1. Outstanding small fixed blade in your price range, far more versatile than the Nimravus.

BM is now coming out with a fixed-blade Griptilian. 154CM w/RC 58-60, 4.16" blade, with molded handle scales. MSRP is listed as being $100, you'll probably be able to find it for less at online retailers in a little bit.

Whoa! That just made my day right there. And I like the handle much better than on the regular griptillians. Looks more comfortable.

yeh! kershaw echo all the way i have 3 but can't wear out or break the first love the way it fits my hand onion design recurve blade all for half of your budget
