Fallkniven F1 for a no nonsense, very sturdy and practical user. Nimravus for a more tactical looking slicer and Benchmade Outbounder for a good looking and very versatile, small utility knife. Spyderco Moran if you want a very light super cutter. These are all assuming your are looking for at small to medium knife.

I agree, but I add the following:
Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V
Benchmade Outbounder
Spyderco Temperance FB

I recommend the KA-BAR USMC and Buck 119 as first fixed blades because they are standards and true classics. I think it makes sense to start collecting fixed blades by getting two of the most popular, classic fixed blades in the world. They're great knives, too.

But if you just want a good all around fixed blade, I'd suggest a Becker BK-7.

For bang-for-the-buck, I would also suggest a BK7. The Campanion is pretty heavy duty for such a short blade, almost unwieldy in my opinion. I had one and sold it. If you want one that short, you might the BK10 (IIRC that's the right model... it's the Crewman.)

Bark River's also get great reviews; I would really like to try out a Northstar sometime.
