I have 4 safes in my house. The last safe I had put on the second floor. The installers commented " when you sell this house, it goes with the house......we ain't moving this F'n safe again. :D
I had to have the stairwell totally redone......Sheetrock, paint, etc."................looks good in my office;)

Lots of good advice here. I agree, get twice as big as you think you'll need, and get a good quality safe.

Layers of protection is key. First, get a monitored security system. If your homeowner's insurance is up to snuff, usually they'll give you enough of a discount for having the monitored system that it'll pay for itself in a year or two.

Second, try and put your safe in a far corner of the house. The further from points of entry the better. Next, two sides up against concrete is good (three is ideal if you are able), and bolting it to the floor is a MUST! If the safe can be tipped over, it is much more easily defeated.

Also, conceal the safe if possible. Put together, these things slow the crooks down, giving them less time to steal your hard-earned stuff.

Finally, don't do this. ^^^ (No offense intended Busto.) Don't go advertising what you have in your house. Unless you're some really super-rich dude, if someone breaks into your house and goes after your safe, it's usually because someone told them it was there and worth going after. Word of mouth could betray you.

Thanx SP....but I think that I live in an area no one frequents and have all the above stated precautions...extra insurance monitored alarm system super duty fire protection large lag bolts for the floors and just about everything short of a claymore perimeter (there are some people allowed on the property...the USMC trained me to be prepared for every situation).
