I'm curious of what everyone uses to carry their core gear on a day hike? I'm leaning towards a lumbar type pack. Something that I could throw into a bigger bag if I'm going for an extended time, and then pull it out for short hikes.

I really like the Proteus Versipack. But I'm looking at other "lumbar" pack options. I'd like something that isn't to big, and that I would use to carry things for day hikes, rather than true BOB uses.

Maxpedition seems to make some great stuff, but in a different "category" than Mountain Smith and Kelty.

I'm mainly and canoer, camper, and hiker.

Thanks to pitdog, I'm leaning towards a Proteus.

Naked,

My main day-hiking pack is a Maxpedition Devil Dog. I really like it, but it might be bigger than you are looking for. I wear it mostly over my shoulder with a strap, but it is pretty comfortable as a lumbar pack too. I have a proteus clone that I am not using much because it doesn't carry water, which means that I than have to carry a bottle or canteen in addition to my pack. Good luck.

I just got this. It's your average size lumbar, maybe a couple cubic in. bigger. I carry this survival gear in it and there is still room for five power bars.

I really Love mountainsmith lumbar packs, and I use them with shoulder staps and find them very comfortable. Mountainsmith makes a recycled line of packs for those who love to embrace trees.
Check out the tour and Day models for larger loads.

www.campmor.com has a good selection

Haha, Pitdog, I looked at your pictures and I thought: "That looks an awful lot like BC." Then I looked at your location. :)

God I love it here.

Anyway, can we get a pic of the pack on you? I wanna see how it rides.

Ditto on the pack on you. Maybe a side shot showing how much it protrudes from your body.

And as much a I love you pictures pitdog, I hate that I don't like where it looks like that! My area looks a little different:

I don't have many of me actually wearing it as I normally take the pics, but here are two that might help....

Thanks! Ok where did that red coat come from?

I really like a small camelbak backpack rather than a lumbar pack. It carries 3 liters of water and is less cumbersome than carrying a 1 liter water bottle. It is light has just enough room for all my equipment and the best part is that I do not even know its there when running, rock climbing, mountain biking, rafting, etc....

dd61999, I also really like that option. But I went away from it as I already have a ultra slim camelback that I use for some things.

I'm glad that it works for you!
