recommended $200-$500 knife

A crk would be a great gift idea although a custom may be better especially if it is tailored to the user.

Can't go wrong with a Chris Reeve knife.
I like the blade of the Insingo better than the Sebby ... also I'd skip the micarta ... straight up titanium slides in and out better, and takes less room in the pocket ...
of course these are just my most humble opinions ... :)

If your dad could appreciate the subtleties of the sebenza-
go that route, but if not- zt 0560 would suffice or even
the more eclectic kershaw tilt.

Maybe even look at the CRK Ti Lock... it is a beautiful knife with a unique lock... More geared towards high end EDC than anything hard. It is definitely on my list.

A custom is a great choice, but depending on how soon you need one it may not be Ideal.

Check out the El patron from Calvera Cutlery. Around 450$ and handmade with great materials.

There are knives being offered for sale in the exchange here all the time. You can get your old man a one of a kind knife or at least a pretty unique one. If I were going to drop $500 it'd have to be for a custom.

I haven't been that happy about my 560. To be fair, it's my favorite ZT to date, and I'll probably keep it. But I hate the jimping placement (I keep barking my finger on it when I flip it open, and it seems to like to partially open in my pocket. It's likely going to be my around-the-house or in-the-car knife, and will see zero carry time.

I think customs are the way to go given your budget, although CRK, Strider, and Hinderers are very popular around here.

My personal favorite designer is Darrel Ralph, although his customs can get very high dollar. He's got a mid-tech line which is excellent.

That's a big range.....lots of great knives fit in there! If he is just using it for light duty, how about a quality slip joint? There are some great makers right here that could build you whatever you wanted.

i was talkign to him already about a slip-joint. he said he would prefer a locking folder. but thanks for the recommendation.

Custom can be nice.
But custom doesn't always mean better quality than production/semi-production.

Buy what you want.
That is what matters, especially at that price point.

Really depends on your style and preferences....so much out there :D

That's why I keep buying them.:D
I USED to say things like "After this one, that will be enough."
Ah, the innocence...
thats what im thinking while looking through these customs. jeez i gotta get me one of thoes.
