Recommended City Knives (2.5" max)?

I've just started a new job in a city with a 2.5" max blade law.

Only a few knives in my collection fit the bill, and I know there have to be some real gems out there that I haven't seen yet, or have forgotten. So I'm looking for recommendations.

I'm fairly happy with these, but they're all at the low end of what I'm happy carrying:

- Fallkniven U2 (2.5" SPGS)
- Boker Subclaw (1.875" AUS-8)
- Kershaw Shallot (2.25" 420HC)

My general EDC preference is for 3.0-3.5" folders in nice steel; assisted openers from Kershaw (Shallot, Blur) & some Spydies (Salt series, Military)

What would you EDC if you were limited to 2.5"? I'd love to see some new ones, thanks!

Are you talking about boston? I work there and usually carry a case peanut or sak, but the spyderco urban is nice as well as the dragonfly/ladybug.

Isn't the Urban a hair over 2.5" (think maybe it's the green with leaf blade that is)? If you are concerned with the blade length, you may also want to consider the potential of a knife being considered a gravity knife as well, just something else to think about.

May wanna consider...
Spyderco: Dragonfly, Lava, Meerkat, Ladybug, Cat, Chicago
Sog: Flash I
Leatherman: Skeletool

Spyderco Dragonfly
Spyderco Leafstorm
Spyderco Kopa
Spyderco Lava
Buck Waimea
Kershaw Chive

and there are many others...

It really comes down to what you like

There must not be many other cities with 2.5" knife laws, so you've got me pegged in Boston. Anyone interested in a BF meetup...in Cambridge or Somerville?

A hair over 2.5" is not going to be a problem. My U2 has passed through the security gate at Cit Hall a dozen times where JD Smith had a knife of his own design confiscated (!!!). And I may carry a 3" utility blade in my pack from time to time--I just want the one in my pocket to be genteel, elegant, and "hello officer" legal.

I am more interested in the Leaf Storm than the Ladybug, if that helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

yup. 2 and 9/16 inch blade. so close yet so far.

Spyderco Chicago or Cat, both Carbon Fiber and CPM S30V and can be found for less than $50. City length laws is exactly why the Chicago was formed(2in max limit in Chicago).

You could get a Benchmade mini-grip or sequel and cut .4 inches of the tip off??? :barf:

lol

That Double Cross looks really interesting... It's on my radar now :)

Although not thrilled with the AUS-6A steel, may have to carry a pocket sharpener around in case I cut some butter or something :p

Hi Karambert -

I would highly recommend the SOG Flash 1 -

I have one - there are several reviews on youtube to watch.

Another good one is the Kershaw Centofante - no pocket clip so it can just go into the pocket.

Both of the above are assisted openers.

best regards -

Sodbuster, Jrs usually have 2.5" blades and everyone makes one. Queen's Country Cousin may be the best of the breed at under $30 with D-2 steel. Rough Rider offers several with linerlocks as 3.5" work knives. (Blade length of any folder is likely to be an inch shorter, give or take, than closed length.)

Don't let the AUS-6 stop you if you like the Double Cross. It'll take a good edge, and city knives rarely get the hard use that would make edge retention much of a factor. In a similar vein, Rough Rider offers a couple of small double lockbacks that are cute as can be.

Spyderco Leaf Storm. 2 7/16" blade, designed to fit into the change pocket of a pair of jeans. Titanium lock like a Sebbie on one side, jade G-10 on the other. Nice little knife.

spyderco cat

I'm going to second this. I received a factory second cat from my birthmas, and I am very impressed. I usually carry larger knives, as I usually EDC a manix or a military so this knife was an interesting departure. The CF scales on the cat are very nice and the walker lock up is really strong and tight and mine has no blade play. Best part is the wire clip that sinks the knife nice and low in the pocket but holds it nice and secure. If you want some thing a little larger I think the Chicago would be some thing to look at.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I am really impressed at the number of compliant blades Spyderco offers, and will probably pick up a Leaf Storm. I also like the Kiwi and Kopa for dress, and will probably pick up one or two of the others which were mentioned.
