Recommended City Knives (2.5" max)?

I carry my small sebenza (2.95" +/-) in the city limits, and have an izula (2.65" +/-) in my bag.

I haven't run into trouble with the law as of yet, so I haven't had any problems.

Don't consider this legal advise, but from what I gather, most LEOs aren't out to arrest law abiding citizens that have knives a bit over the legal limit. As long as you don't go waving your knife around or being a danger to yourself or others, you should be fine.

I also like the Kiwi and Kopa for dress, and will probably pick up one or two of the others which were mentioned.

The last ones are being discounted, so hurry for a good deal. Both are excellent, and in fact sufficient for typical office usage.

Also do consider Moki. Excellent upmarket quality stuff.

I posted this little liner lock, made by Kansei Matsuno, mostly because it is one of Kansei's "City Knives". The blade has a 2.5" cutting edge and the Devin Thomas Spirograph stainless damascus is striking.

The Izula is actually has a 2.88" blade length ;)

But this for the most part. For the past year or so I have been generally carrying a 3-3.5" folder on me while in Boston and even going to school / work on a college campus - never once had a problem. That being said, I too have been looking for a legal length knife to carry around when in the city but haven't found one that I've cared enough to spend the buck on.

I wasn't sure about the ergos on the Leaf Storm. Haven't been able to handle one, just seems like you may wanna grab onto the bump towards the front (which would invite your index slipping onto the blade) or the normal grip which leaves alot of space between your hand and the blade and just seems kinda of weird for cutting?

Interestingly, the Emerson Snubby (which I was going to suggest) specs out at 2.7", so it is probably not going to be on your list.

This design makes you use the knife at an angle, but it works. Your first 2 fingers fit into the depression and your thumb rides on top to control the knife, you shouldn't feel the need to put your finger on the "bump", as it serves like a guard. Remember that this is a small knife so the distance between fingers and knife is not as great as you may think.

I myself use a U2 as work and it works just fine for me. It opens boxes and strips cables just like I want it to do. I have heard some remarks but when I quote the law regarding knives in public places they just go silent.

The U2 also has a classic look that doesnt intimidate. If it had a black blade, thumb stud, serrations, tanto and some "cool" name printed on it I guess people would be scared.

Several people at work do carry some sort of folder or multitool. No one cares about that.

my limited experience wont lend you much help but i do have a spyderco cat...its a studly little knife..cpms30v steel...cf handle flat ground blade (which i found out is a big plus to most people).

almost got a chicago..the blade is slightly shorter...same knife basically...just a size difference..

the CAT is worth every penny my mother-in-law paid for it...

Kershaw Half Ton. 2-1/2" blade and it won't break the bank if some guard decides he wants it, I mean needs to confiscate it for safety reasons.

That is one beautiful knife, Peregrin!

Those Moki knives are elegant--I have come across some other Mokis this week, but none that appealed to me like those do. Thanks!

jfn and Lock1454, thanks for your thoughts--we're totally on the same page.

I'm not worried so much about being hassled, but I pass through security at City Hall (with metal detector) on a regular basis, and they have turned me away in the past for a 3" Leek. They're generally decent and measure the blades, and I don't want to risk missing a meeting because I'm a half inch too big. In the knife department, I mean.

We also have spot bag check Security Theater on the MBTA from time to time, and I have exercised my right to decline the search--and walk to the next station--even when I was not carrying anything that would have brought unwanted attention.

I plan to collect some of the best recommendations on a web page for Boston knife enthusiasts.

how about a kershaw lfk?

i just carry whatever. usually a blur or small crkt crawford/kasper. but i don't have to get through security like you do.

Had no idea you can decline the search O.o Take the MBTA a lot, never thought about it. Did they actually choose to screen you and you then declined? And do they just check your bag or do they pat ya down and everything?

If they consider the blade being only the cutting edge I would highly recommend a Spyderco Native 4 in carbon fiber (2.5" of cutting edge)...tolerances are very tight, opens smoothly, and has VG-10 steel, very nice knife indeed.
