Recon 1 CTS-HXP, anyone?

KLJTech, I've been eyeing this knife for awhile, but have always kind of shied away from tantos. Do you find this blade to be very usable with the tanto style Cold Steel implements?

I probably EDC a Tanto folder as often as I do one with a drop point and I've always found them to be very useable for my needs. You have that long cutting edge on the bottom like a razor and you can use the tip laid on its side for scraping things off a flat surface (like a label off glass). Plus, the strong tip is good for penetration.

My Recon 1 didn't come as sharp as my AUS8 Code 4, but a minute or so on the strop and it was good to go. CTS-XHP is printed right under the Cold Steel markings.

I sent one to a buddy (green handle) for his bday. I paid right under a hundred shipped. He said he hadn't used it but has dropped it on a cement pad. Rolled a portion of the edge. Loves the knife though... Wtf?

I wish I had friends that would gift me knives.

That stinks that it was dropped on cement, but I'd rather have a part of the edge roll rather than chip off. Maybe your buddy can work the edge out on a strop or sharpener and be back in business. I haven't had the new Recon 1 long and it hasn't seen any impact, so I have no idea how well the new steel will hold up under that type of thing. Any idea how far the knife fell? I would have thougth that the CTS-XHP was hard/tough enough to hold up to drop like that from about waist high but I've seen odd things happen when knives are dropped. Sometimes you luck out and can't find a scratch and others you're not so lucky.

If the website description doesn't tell you which steel it is, you are shopping on the wrong site. BTW if the price is around $50 its AUS8A.

If you at B&M Knife Store you tell for yourself. If it doesn't have CTS-XHP on the blade, its AUS8A.

Not always. I bought one in the For Sale section very lightly used for.$45
