Recon: wild edibles

This is just a word of warning. Six hilltribe people from Chiang Mai went to hospital this week after eating wild mushrooms. One young girl has died. These are people who live their whole lives in the mountains, and msuhrooms are one of their major crops, so anyone can be fooled. I grow peanuts here and some of the farm workers like to collect those snail shells. Also their are crabs which are very good to eat.

Hey JohnG,

I forgot to mention something. Since these are all new foods to you, you have no experience if you are hypoallergic to any of them. I know some wild food instructors that suggest you have an epi pen (or two) available when trying a new wild food. I like to do this as well.

I met a guy who developed anaphalaxis from eating Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum), which is a wild edible. Fortunately, his wife is a nurse and recognized the symptoms in time.

And if you think I'm exaggerating, consider peanut butter can be lethal to some kids!!!!

FWIW............

And to chiangmaiheadman, good heads up! I guess it goes back to the old saying: "Familiarity breeds contempt." :(

Thanks Doc, that's a good idea. I'll pick one up asap.

Edit: apparently, Epipen is prescription-only here in the US. In Canada it's available over the counter.

Talk to your doctor and explain what you're doing and he/she will probably fix you up. Actually, I get a Rx for mine because it's cheaper than over the counter and it's a tax deduction.
