Good point, but an Opinel is possible, Laguiole or some regional knife. I don't think the French Army issued knives in WW1 so it would be a personal carry Jolipapa Jolipapa might know or shed some light on it.

I don't think of an Opi nor a Lag. Most probably was this poor guy (seemingly wounded), an estafette (despatch rider), using the standard to cut his bread. This system with ring is called cra-cra (btw still produced by Nontron). It was issued with some tissue for the soldiers to make their own sheath.

Fixed blade like the Vengeur (avenger), much more aggressive was used for trench "work".

Or this trench Pradel but most of time mere butcher's knives, sometime a modified Rosalie (the nickname for the Lebel's bayonet).
