Used my 2nd species of Australian wood and really like both of them, Ringed Gidgee and now this Red Mallee Burl. The Mallee has some copper tones running through it, (kind of hard to tell from the pics) so I used copper spacers and thong tube.
Thanks again for your critique of the last knife I posted, it's very helpful so please feel free to do it again for this one. As you can see I made a more traditional guard this time :)

5" Clay treated 1084 blade (just did a quick polish)
Aged mild steel and copper hardware
Stabilized Red Mallee Burl handle
10 1/4" o.a.l.

Thanks,
Dave

Very Nice. The combinations of colors in the copper and burl really make the knife stand out. That will be a picker upper at a table. It would walk away rather quickly also.

The only critiques I would have are, something is going on on the spine. Can't tell if there are rough spots right above the ricasso. The other thing is the thickness guard right in front of the finger. If you are looking for balance it should not be thicker than the spine of the blade at the ricasso. Just looks a little blocky.

Very nice overall package though. I would be very happy with it..

Thanks Chuck!
I wasn't able to take more photos tonight but I wanted to show a spine view (tomorrow) there's some thumb groove file work up there. I'm a little slow on your 2nd one, I can't figure out what you're saying :o:)

Very nice, Dave. Now I've got to go find the other thread. Will these be for sale soon?

The Very first word out of my mouth was "Wow"
Nice Knife!!!

Me too Dave! You really nailed that one! beautiful package:thumbup: Love the wood love the copper love the hamon.
Really nice,
Matt Doyle
Oops just saw something in looking back. Looks like a check on one side of the handle? It appears to be open. If so I would go back and fill it in with superglue. Not a big deal for many, but it is something I would want if it were mine. By the way if you would like to make it mine just email me and I'll give you my address!

Stunning! Great choice of blade shape and handle... and you're right, that wood handle is incomparable!

Very nice knife.
I think AC was saying that the finger roll in the guard (the part that sticks down in front of the finger) should taper to a thinner point. It gives a visual balance to the look.

Nice knife. Has an quiet aged beauty. Nice lines and the copper sets 0ff the handle well, as the harmon sets of the blade.

There's a lot of good stuff going on with that knife.
How did you like the malle?
Was it stabilized, or natural? Just take it to a polish or finish it in some way?

Being that I'm not a knifemaker,Ill talk from the other side of the table....the choice of handle material is fantanstic in combination with the aged steel, and I like the way you followed it from the guard to the pins. Doesn't take away from the handle at all. Then the use of the copper seems to help begin and end the handle to give a sense of dimension. And it doesn't hurt to have a wonderful hamon line there too.
It all looks like a winning combination one that I wouldn't walk away from.

Thanks very much you guys!!

Hi Wade, it's hard to say when my knives will be for sale again with this crazy health stuff, hopefully soon. I have your email and will let you know, thanks!

Hi Matt (Doyle), I know it doesn't look like it in the pics. but everything has been filled and leveled.
By the way if you would like to make it mine just email me and I'll give you my address!
:D

Hi Dwayne, it's been a while, hope you're doing well.

Karl, I really like working with this Stabilized Mallee but don't think I would like it if it wasn't stabilized. I had it highly polished but didn't like it so I brought it back down to I think 6-800 grit then 4/0 steel wool rub followed by a hand buffed carnauba/bees wax mixture.

Thanks for the clarification Stacy! I didn't know about that and really appreciate the info. from you and Chuck!!

Dave

Here's a shot of the file worked spine and a tracing of the guard showing the blade/guard relation.
