Red Mallee Burl Utility

That just sings. Beautiful wood, the copper and iron go great with it and the etched blade with hamon looks like just grew there.

I like everything about the knife except the guard. It really does look good but its about twice as thick as what it needs to be where the index finger would go. Could just be my taste to. Again, nice looking knife!

What Stacy and Ray said about the guard is what I was getting to in my confusing manner. It is a preference that has become sort of an accepted practice. I am not saying that you have to do it but just a point to think about. If you have a desire to do ABS testing it is one thing an MS will look at. It is a wonderful knife though. The colors just draw the eye. That's why I said it will walk away from a table very fast. Keep it up

I think it's gorgeous Dave!

Your combination of elements for color is always very pleasing to the eye!!!

My only critique would be like Chuck and Ray said... and it IS JUST personal preference... definitely not a right/wrong type of thing.

Since a picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words..... It's going to look arrogant to use my own as an example, but I knew how to find the pic fast :)

I thin the "lug" or "quillion" down a lot on my guards... the portion of 416 that extends down below the cutting edge/handle and is the ACTUAL finger guard. It isn't going to bend down over your finger in use, and I think thinner is more pleasing to the eye... so you can remove a lot of metal from it. Make sense now?

I thought I knew what you guys were trying to tell me......NOW I know what you were talking about, thanks Nick! Your pic and the way you explained it along with Chuck, Stacy and Ray's comments the light bulb came on and finally made sense!!
Just looked at the other 8 I've made with this type guard and only 1 comes close, but from now on....they all will!

Thanks again!!
Dave

Here's a pic of the only 1 with a thinner hangy down thang

That looks great..... The handle flows nicely and accentuates the blades flow. The Hamon is crisp and the guard is balanced with the overall design. It just sings pick me up and cut something. Now if you can find a better makers mark it would be hard to tell this from many of the (well known) makers. Keep it up you are doing great.

Wow, that is a great looking knife. Any thoughts on a sheath (design or materials?)
Nathan

Thanks Chuck, A makers mark is on my very long list of things I need to take care of.

Thanks Bill, feels great to be able to work in the shop again!

Thanks Nathan, it'll be a while before I get back to making sheaths but probably some kind of pouch. I had one that I made for another knife that I kind of like how the dark chocolate color looks with the lighter red/brown Mallee, I may use this color and similar style sheath.

...it'll be a while before I get back to making sheaths...

You funny, Dave. :p

Hey folks. Don't let Dave fool you. He makes wonderful sheaths that I bet he could get well over $100 for. Absolute works of beauty. Of course, Dave, you probably mean you are using all your time to get back into the knives and you just don't have time to do the sheaths. Our loss.

For lack of a better adjective, that sheath is TIGHT. (meaning it's perfect I guess. Never having been accused of having a great vocabulary):D
I'm a big fan of that color myself. I'll be delving into sheaths real soon, what is the name of that dye?

Dave, my friend, you already know my opinion of your work---and I have run out of superlative adjectives regarding your skills. Sandy

You're right Wade, I work for short periods of time (sometimes none) throughout the day and they're all spent in the knife shop but I can't wait to get back to making sheaths!

Nathan, that sheath in the pic was one of my first and at that time I was a mad scientist experimenting and mixing different colors. I still have that mixed color in a bottle but I can't remember what combination I used, I think you can get close mixing chocolate and medium brown Fieblings (sp?) dye together.

Heard you recently got a new shop toy Sandy, one of my dream machines!! I know you're enjoying using it!!

Thanks guys,
Dave

That is a very nice knife Dave! Beautiful wood, combination with the copper spacers is also very nice.

Dave,
What a beauty! All the choices you made with this knife are excellent! I particularly like the red mallee against the copper and mild steel. It has nice warm and cool color contrast (sorry...art school training kickin in). Also, nice contast between the hard and soft edges of the knife. It appears that ergonomics were a key consideration with this design.

BRAVO!!

She will look good in her custom leather clothes also.

Super stuff! You're making a heck of a comback Dave, your not letting your illness get in your way. Always good to see something new by you, it's refreshing!
