Rediscovered Svord Peasant

I carry a Mini Peasant quite often and use it around the house for cutting tasks like tape and the like. The Peasant is such a simple yet amazing design. I love mine and have been meaning to get a few more.

Yeah, sorry when I think carbon steel I think 1095 first because it so ubiquitous. Lets just say I love carbon steel- whats the svord got over a bk14? Its only a little cheaper, and the 14 is going to be a tougher knifer and not a whole lot longer. I want to love the svord, really really do. Think they are cool as hell.

What does a folder have over a fixed blade? It folds. That means it doesn't need a sheath, is more compact, and is viewed differently in the eyes of the law. You don't need to love the Svord. There are plenty of other knives that may suit you better. That's okay.

Cool pictures. I just bought a Svord Peasant with the wood handles. It's much larger and bulkier than I imagined, and with thicker steel than I expected... And it looks more home-made than any homemade knife I own. :D

"Buy a Peasant Knife as a pleasant present for a peasant." LOL!

I can't see myself carrying this thing, so maybe I'll follow the brochure's advice and start a collection. :D

The svord is going to be less than half the price of a bk14 for starters. Second, its a non locking folder, so its legal many more places. Third, its going to slice a bit better because it is thinner, making it more handy for most use you'd use a folder for. Also, on the full size one the handle is large enough to fit my whole hand, while the bk14 is a three finger knife for me.

But the Becker bk14 is a great knife, just totally different. The svörd is going to be very tough for a folder, but the Becker will be tougher. Just totally different.

I have one, and I like it for basic household cutting tasks. The Svord is a great knife, but I personally don't think it would work well with my edc.

IMO, the fact such a old & simple design can hold a two page thread in this day of super steels & locks says a lot about it.
It works and is fun. What more do you need?.

True! ^
I could have saved lots of money!
But, I do like some of my moderns.

I have one full size and one mini. They take a great edge and are fun to use. They even carry better than I thought they would. They won't replace my Spydercos for my EDC, but I do carry them from time to time on the weekends around the house.

Does it open by mistake? Especially when it comes out of the pocket? I've thought about one, but I'm not sure how practical it is vs other options.

I have a mini in rotation.

How easily it opens is determined by the two screws. Mine has never opened in pocket or otherwise accidentally.

Good to know. Is it comfortable in the pocket with the arm sticking out?

I usually tuck mine beside my wallet, the tang doesn't clear the edge of my pocket. So yes, it's comfortable. I have read reports of the full size peasant's tang poking people in the belly but I can't comment on that.

I think you are very correct. We all love our newer steels, fancy locks, carbon fiber, etc. Then you pick up a peasant and realize that this style of knife has been used for hundreds of years as an effective working tool.
Cool knives.

I think there's a odd gene in human beings that makes us want to invent a better mouse trap when the old one works fine. That's okay, but we should remember sometimes simple is a good thing, and very often its good enough. The basic friction folder has been around a couple thousand years, and is still being used. That must say something.

I'm going to have to try out a Svord.

For those so inclined here is a link to a DXF of the svord slabs. There are just three points for the three holes. For the stop pin I used 1/8" and the tip narrowly misses the Chicago screw (usually... the blades vary). 5/32" works maybe better.
