Redundant Knives

I recently bought two Spyderco Paramilitary 2 knives, and immediately my family began asking why I had bought two of the exact same knife; what the point of a redundant copy was.

My reasoning is that if I break my primary knife, I'll have a secondary one ready; and we all know how hard it is to find a place with the Paramilitary 2 in stock.

Does it make sense to own a fully redundant backup knife or am I just insane like everyone is telling me? To them it may sound insane, but I want to hear it from the people who 'understand'.

Thanks!

A while back I had a primary and a redundant XM-18. I kept it for the same reason you do, in case one has to be sent in for service I have another to use. I don't think it's crazy at all

If I find a knife I really like I usually buy several back ups of that knife in case they discontinue the model.

Its definitely insane. Get out the straight jacket, cuz you're goin to the nut house.
But first let me give you my address so you can send me your spare pm2.
No wait! Then I'd have 2! But then again, as long as its not the plain black g10 and satin blade then they wont be identical, and that's totally sane.

Spares of something that sells as well as the PM2 doesn't make that much sense. Spyderco will make them for another decade at least. Other than snapping tips off I've never broken a knife. Losing them is more likely.

I like to buy two of the knives I find that I really like. One to carry and use, the other to sit in my knife collection/showcase and look pretty... until I break the other or something else then the spare comes out!

You're asking a group of nut jobs if you're nuts? Of course we're going to tell you that you're completely sane. :)

I already know I'm insane, just ask my therapist.

I want to know if owning a completely redundant knife makes me even more insane. It may just be the way I've been trained in various tasks; to have a backup to my primary and a backup to that backup.

I'd like to own a third Paramilitary 2, although I'm setting my sights on a Sebenza 21. Don't tell my family about this - it needs to be a surprise.

You must really like that Sage 2, mate.

I love my Paramilitary 2 more than my potential future offspring.

Having multiples of the same knife is not insane. It's being prepared. Your last statement is insane to me. When you see those future offspring, you will forget all about everything else for a good long while. (You might even get to use your knife to cut the cord! Yay!)

Having more than one knife in the same model is anything but insane. It's pure logic, you need one for a user, one to look at and admire in a virgin state, before it's violated by the cruel world. And sometimes one to pass on to a fellow knife knut whom is desperately wanting one and cannot get his hands on it. People that don't share the passion of knives really don't have a clue why someone would spend so much money on a knife, let alone having multiples of the same knife.
I think they're the ones that are insane!!!!

I don't think you're crazy. In the case of the PM2, personally I think Spyderco comes out with new models regular enough that often you want the new one over the old one. So, I probably would not have an extra PM2 (which are pretty expensive).

I have several Vic Adventurer models as I carry one everyday. I have on occasion lost/misplaced my using one at a job site and got one of my backups for the next day use. I use these pretty hard, so sometimes there are nicks in the blade and so forth which means I'm not going to drive 50 miles to retrieve it.

Other than that, unless I just want a unused knife; example Northwoods Madison elephant ivory and a "duplicate" jigged bone version to use.... I don't have extra ones per se. I have quite a few knives that if I loose one, I can be pretty happy with another. But if I really like that particular knife, I'll order another one to replace the "missing" one pretty quickly. It is a rarity when I actually loose a knife, misplace yes, loose no.

I was about to pull the trigger on one and mentioned how much it was to a few friends. They preceded to tare me a new one. So when I finaly pulled the trigger I didn't tell a soul until weeks later. Recently I've come to terms with the fact that I'm the only one who "gets" my insanity(and yall of course), so it just saves me a whole lot of hassle to keep my new knives and their prices to myself.

I'm reading that off to my family members in hopes that they may see the light. Well said!

even more insane.

That's like you asking if it's possible to get a girl more pregnant...

Your fine, don't sweat it. Would your wife/gf have a 2nd copy of her top or shoes if she thought she wouldn't be able to find it/them again?

Ha,ha,I have two para2s myself. While I'm not likely the poster child when it comes to mental health,I can say you're not alone.:)

I have 3 Gayle Bradley's. To me it's about the perfect knife. So your not alone or crazy :)

I have a question to pose... Is it insane to carry a spare tire in your vehicle?

Point proven. I believe in backups and backups for your backups.
