Redundant Knives

Nope, because if you lose one (heaven forbid!) at least you still have one. Will lessen the heartbreak, for sure.

If you you find really cool tennis shoes nowadays you like, better buy two pair of them, also. They change them really quickly and when you go to get another pair, you won't find them.

I'd rather have two knives than two pair of shoes though, for the record!

I have 3 Kershaw Tremors, mainly because I really like the design, its $18 and it has been out of production for 2+ years. If only I could just find a plain edge version...

If you can afford it, it's perfectly sane.
You buy one folder and then a second one (different maker) - from the point of view of a non knife person this shlud be redundancy too.
So if you buy 2 different or two of the same makes no difference.
Human beeings are problem-solvers and if a solution works we tend to duplicate it.

You are perfectly sane in my book.

I think you are fine having redundant samples of a specific knife. All of the reasoning that I have read in this thread so far rings true to me. I have duplicates of the PM2 as well (actually, my user is camo/DLC and my safe queen in black/DLC, so not exact duplicates). I have exact duplicates of a few old models that are no longer produced (for example, the Kershaw 1436 G10 Hawk; not the new China produced one, but the larger version of the old Wild Wild Turkey) (also the ZT 0780). You always have to keep in mind that, just because you love a certain knife, there isn't necessarily enough demand for the maker to continue to produce it. The only reason that I don't have more duplicates is lack of money, lol! If I won the lottery, I think it would be automatic for me to buy two whenever I liked a knife model. Anyway, again, yes, you are fine buying duplicates (as long as you can afford it).

Redundancy is good insurance and it's a policy I subscribe to fully. Right now I have two Gayle Bradleys, two Delica 4s and three Dragonflies. When the availability and prices for the PM 2 improve, I will buy a second one.

Insane? Meet me at the asylum with the other knuts.

I have never purchased a knife as a redundant but I've thought about it. I can see the logic. It's better than that feeling when you lose a hard to replace knife. And what's the difference in that and the person who has 110 Delicas to cover every color/steel/handle combo possible?

At one point in my collecting I had 2 BK2's--2 RD4's--3 Condor Rodans it was just insane.

I like the Paramilitary's so much I just bought my 19th,you can't have to many!

I have 2 PPTs and 2 Ocelots. Since they're out of production, I can't get another one if something happens to them.

Spares of something that sells as well as the PM2 doesn't make that much sense. Spyderco will make them for another decade at least. Other than snapping tips off I've never broken a knife. Losing them is more likely.

First, at times they are impossible to find from dealers new so the availability is the opposite of what you claim and more in line with what the OP says. Second, with proper use no one should be snapping tips off. Third, with proper care and attention to your tools no one should misplace one.

On topic, I have bought multiples of the same knife. 0560 & BM 810 are examples. Seems totally normal to this insane knife nut!

Thanks for the great input, much appreciated! My thinking was that I should get a few while they're still in stock; and that I could potentially use the spare if I had to send the primary in for service.

It seems a bit insane to me and here's why:
If I had a 911 turbo I would rather have a BMW M5 for a backup instead of an identical 911 turbo.

So I would say go for something equivalently awesome but different such as a ZT 0562cf for a "backup"
If you really loose your spyderco, you can probably survive with an 0562cf for a couple of weeks.

I would rather have more different toys than be sure I was never without my one favorite.
