Redundant Knives

I recently bought two Spyderco Paramilitary 2 knives, and immediately my family began asking why I had bought two of the exact same knife; what the point of a redundant copy was.

My reasoning is that if I break my primary knife, I'll have a secondary one ready; and we all know how hard it is to find a place with the Paramilitary 2 in stock.

Does it make sense to own a fully redundant backup knife or am I just insane like everyone is telling me? To them it may sound insane, but I want to hear it from the people who 'understand'.

Thanks!

I find that I get multiple ''theme'' knives. Basically the same type of cutting tool over and over again. Does anyone really need 7-8 different SAK's ?, and I'm not even interested in collecting. I seem to be going through an axe thing lately. Like freaking Goldilocks and her porridge. :D

What if you liked your one favorite enough that you didn't care about others? Might you not simply buy different versions of it (different colors, different steels)?
We all have different approaches to this, depending on our likes, preferences, and expendable finances. I have duplicates of one or two folding knives - in most cases, there is something at at least slightly different. (ie I have 2 Manix2s, one tan in M4, one grey in Cruwear). I have 3 of the exact same fixed blade - 2 because I used them for knife wielding techniques, one in each hand. The other was a gift from somebody that didn't know I had them. I have 3 or 4 BK16s - not because I was worried about losing or breaking them; but because I was doing some modifications to amuse myself, so they're all somewhat different.

That's like you asking if it's possible to get a girl more pregnant...

Your fine, don't sweat it. Would your wife/gf have a 2nd copy of her top or shoes if she thought she wouldn't be able to find it/them again?

This.

This is a good point and an argument I haven't thought to use.
My girlfriend has 12 shirts of the exact same cut. 3 black, 3 white, the rest assorted colors.

Why? They're hard to find, her favorite and she likes variety. Perfect retort for buying 4 or 5 PM2's

Honestly, my taste in knives changes so much that it would be ridiculous for me to purchase backups. I've had so many resets to what I own and carry that I've hardly had time to wear in a knife to the point of needing a backup, and I generally have enough that I'll have a suitable placeholder - which also gives me an excuse to shop around for something new and interesting.

Speaking of duplicates, I had mentioned in a previous post that I EDC a Vic Adventurer SAK. I mentioned that I routinely keep an extra one in in my knife cache should I loose the one I am carrying. Well... I was visiting a large knife store and I was going to add another Adventurer to my cache. They didn't have it either in stock or in their inventory/complete inventory stock and the sales person indicated that she was pretty sure that this knife was discontinued by Vic. They have every SAK model in stock normally. I was heart broken ( ) thinking in a year or two I would have to change my EDC if I lost the one I carry. So, I promptly order two online and this should do me for a long time of using.

So, on special knives that I really like and use, I do keep duplicates. So, even though the PM2's are pretty expensive, I can understand many of you who really like them to keep spares.

What you do with money you earn is no ones business but your. When you say family do you mean mom & dad. Or a wife, and kids?

If buying more than one of anything is redundant, then I'm about the most redundant person on earth!!!!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with buying backups. The only knife I ever bought a backup of was the PM2. Felt like I needed a black handle to go with my camo handle. I've since sold it because I just didn't see the need for two, and if I ever want or need another they're generally easy enough to come by.

Hey, some people have a closet filled with Jordans, Nikes, etc.. do you! Seems like almost everyone has or had a duplicate of something...

How many cans of beans do you keep on the shelf? My wife complains that I buy too much Lipton tea (gallon sized bags for iced tea). We make it all the time. I keep about a two month supply in house. Buy the stuff at Sams Club and they were out for about of month. Now I keep an extra box. :D

I discovered with my recent SAK order that I already had two unused ones in my cache; now I have four. This will do me.
