That's exactly my point Gene. I was responding to Jon's assertion that the gauchos don't use leather sheaths for their criollos. They do.

From sailing/working on a ranch growing up - a fixed blade is something you can get to, in theory, if you get snagged - being dragged to death is... probably uncommon, but a real concern in ranch work - and you don't have to be dragged too far to get quite hurt.

Those silver knives would have been far too expensive for a typical cowboy.
