Hello everyone this is my first post on Bladeforums. I was referred here by BMRAZOR. I have really enjoyed reading the Balisong threads. Lots of great info
I have a nice collection of BM Balisongs. I have almost always been happy with Benchmades quality. The only exception is my model 239. It has skeletonized cast Zamak handles.
I never mistreated the kinfe. It just didn't hold up like like my other Benchmades. The handles eventually developed stress cracks and broke.
I would like to salvage the blade because it seems to be of good quality and it is in near-perfect condition because I have never used it to cut anything.
Please give me suggestions on what I should do with this blade.
How should I go about rehandling it?
I would like to turn it into a cool one-of-a-kind knife.

The 239 does have a decent blade,MER would be the man to talk to but i dont believe he's accepting orders right now!

You could contact Matt Cook at www.pinoyknife.com He could do a one of a kind handle for you.

Ditto, i have always been a big fan of Matt's work. He has done a few other special bali-projects lately as well.
wheres the safe handle???

Matt is also a very nice & cool guy. I have had a a few extended bali conversations on the phone with him. :)

Maybe someone who had MER re-handle has their old ones?
Here are the three that I own. He's also did two for my Lum Stalker and Tanto blades.

Thanks for the great suggestions everybody!
I saw some pictures of MER's designs and I really liked them. It looks like this is exactly the type of work that he does.
I also found this website http://www.maierblades.com/
Is this website for the same guy, MER?
I wouldn't mind waiting a while if I could have my knife rehandled by MER.
I checked out the Pinoy website too. His knives look great without a doubt. Pinoy is probbably the way to go.
Just to take this thread in a new direction... I have after-hours access to a machine shop including a CNC machine. I can get some assistance and direction but I have very little experence working metal. I would probbably only be able to visit the shop three or four times before I stated getting on someones nerves.
Do you think it would be feasible for me to make my own handles and do a good job?

I would suggest getting into Mer's queue.

I agree. I think I should probbably get in MERs que and wait as long as I have to. I think I will go drop him an email right now.

Eric is definately one of the good guys. I have a couple examples of his work myself, Matt Cook does completely different stuff. I have silently watched his balisong progress through the past few years. My collection is overdue for a Pinoy Bali, or Pinoy project. I saw a new profile, to a VERY popular, discontinued, high end production bali, ground to specs out of some VERY nice damascus all done by Mr. Cook, Neatly wrapped up in a polish towel at the OKCA show this year. Took my breath away. One of our Brothers here at the forums had it done. (Don't know if it's been unveiled yet so hush hush).

I can only speak from my own experiences and only offer my own experiences for what they are worth. But, if you choose to do business with Mr. Cook I would suggest being very cautious. My own experiences with him have not been pleasant at all. And that's all I'm going to say on the subject. You can take that for what you think it's worth.

As I say, I'm not going to argue about this issue. I've given my summary expressed as my opinion. I'd really hate to be forced to go through my rather complete e-mail records and have to drag out old correspondence and I'd hate to have to dig through my photo CDs to drag out old photos. I won't do that unless dragged involuntarily into such a mess which I certainly hope I won't now be.

edited to add some facts.

cmon Chuck... IMHO unnecessary comments. Show him to the GB&U for that stuff. Matt's currently a respected member here by many.

Poster if youd like you are welcome to contact me . i have a fair waiting list but will take on a new project from time to time . Doug Good to see ya . if you wish im sure i can provide Refrences of other who are quite happy with my work !
:) if Mer is still making handles you might see about his list and how long the wait is .

Interesting. I know of Matt's side of the story. And from the experiences of the various people that have recently shown his recent works, I suspect that the negative relationship may very well be only between you and Matt, and should not affect anyone else that wants to deal with him. My opinion only.
