Rehandle Benchmade 239 Balisong

I had hoped not to move this thread too GB&U where it will have broader exposure. But, people (including Mr. Cook) chose to take the subject in that direction. So, here it is.

As I said, I have no desire to engage in an argument on the subject.

I will only advise anyone contemplating engaging with Mr. Cook to do so with open eyes and caution. Each reader will have to decide for himself what weight to assign my opinion.

:) if Mer is still making handles you might see about his list and how long the wait is .

Thank you very much for the invitation. I was leaning towards MER because it looks like handles are his specialty. But if you are up for it, I would be honored to have you rehandle my knife. The pictures I have seen look great. BMRAZOR recommends you and I trust him.
Im going to write you an email.

okee then... can't go wrong with either guy in my opinion. good luck on your project! Sorry it got a little ugly. Too many hens in the hen house all at once. :D

Chuck: 1) Not sure where Matt stepped out of bounds. 2) Also not sure why you couldn't just break off the thread at post #15 and move the rest into the GB&U without having to drag the whole thread here. The VBullletin software is very easy to use for this type of thread splitting and moving. 3) Not sure why you didn't leave a redirect in the Balisong forums so that people interested in the non-GB&U portion can still participate.

As I recall, I purchased two of your first balisong knives even though each exhibits some problems. I did that in order to encourage a new balisong maker. You suggested I photograph them for an exhibit on my website. I suggested that a third knife be added. When you presented me with the third knife to possibly purchase, I opened it up and discovered that the Damascus, your homemade Damascus, had delaminated on one side of the blade (I can dig out the pictures if you insist). No reputable knifemaker would ask to be paid for such a knife. So, it was agreed that you would loan it to me so that I could photograph just the "good" side.

I did photograph the three of them but felt that doing a whole spread on my site without mentioning the flaws and especially the delamination of your Damascus would be dishonest. So, instead, I posted a couple of flattering pictures here on bf.c which generated some interest.

After that, we had a series of misconnections and I didn't get the defective knife returned to you for quite some time. But, since it was defective and basically worthless, I didn't put a lot of priority on returning it.

And so that is how one of your knives did end up being retained by me for an extended time.

As I said, I don't want to drag all of this out and will do so only if forced to.

Thank you everyone for the great advice!
Sorry I inspired a little animosity. I hope I havn't offended anyone.
I do intend to get some Pinoy handels.
But I don't mean to offend Chuck either. Chuck, your website rocks! I found it months ago and have really enjoyed it. You have my respect as well. I didn't disregard your advice but I just wasn't terribly concerned with the issues you presented. I believe Matt will be able to make some handles that I will be proud of.
I look forward to many more fascinating discussions with you all! :D

Thanks Tony, I wish I could just drop it... "rant mode on"but this kind of crap just pisses me off! I have never had a problem w/Chuck, nor do I want one, but I sure think this whole thing was handled wrong. Our balisong forum is NO place to slam. Our negative experiences should be directed to the GB&U, then we, as forum members can direct noob's like MoBali to the GB&U to see for himself. linos just wanted to show off his new prize, since we mentioned Pinoy! We all know how it feels to have a new custom on the way. Investing cash, and going without, forking out the $400 or $500 it took to get it made? Really sucks to hear comments like that right before it arrives. I can't wait for the revue, and I hope he posts it here as well as our baliforum. Makes me want to go buy a Pinoy more than ever, and I just think the portion about...

is a load a horse chit. Moving the ENTIRE thread to the GBU was wrong. (However, I think the motive may backfire big.) This is a BM rehandle thread, (and a damn good one!) not a GBU thread Chuck. Make your own thread instead of hijacking this one.
"rant mode off" This thread is pretty much over, but Tony was right, we deserve this thread back over in our forum, where it belongs.

I just recently completed dealings with Matt Cook / Pinoy. It was a great experience and I have no complaints. I am completely satisfied with with my rehandled BM 239.
Matt took my order on 6/6/05. We spoke on the phone that evening and discussed my order and many other topics pertaining to custom knives. At that time he gave me a price and an estimated date of completion. He required me to pay nothing up front.
Matt and I spoke at least weekly. He gave me updates on the project and answered any crazy question I could think up. I learned alot about the business of making custom knives from our conversations.
On 7/10/05, ahead of schedule, Matt emailed me some pictures of the completed knife for my approval. He also filled me in on the construction and weight of the knife. I was very pleased with it all so I immediately sent my payment.
On 7/14/05 my knife arrived at my home. It is even nicer in person than in it's pictures! It's beautiful, fully functional, well constructed and as smooth as can be.
I have posted a new thread for it in the Balisong area of BF. You can find it
here
In conclusion, This is one mans experience. Take it for what it is worth.
Matt did a fine job for me!
