Remedies against a cold

We try to be ready with elderberry extract. Buy it or make your own by soaking the berries in vodka for several days. It keeps forever. Couple of teaspoons in orange juice three times a day. Lots of vitamin C and D.

elderberry wine is great too!.. gonna have to make some of that extract next year.

When I have a cold, I try to ramp up on the garlic and spicy foods, even more than usual.

If anyone is feeling poorly, I usually make a batch of "health soup." Chicken soup from scratch with rice, spinach, onion, carrots, celery, lots of garlic, basil, oregano, black peppercorns, ginger, and red and green chilies. Add fresh lemon (or lime) juice before serving, along with a few dashes of garlic-chili sauce.

Then have a glass of whiskey or brandy and sleep/sweat it out.

Strong medicine.

Got this advice from a former roommate and med student. I've found that it has worked really well for the past 25+ years I've been using it. When you get the very first signs of a cold, take your fingers and rub the lymph nodes just below your jawline, as well as the ones that run from below your ear straight down to your collarbone. Rub them vigorously for maybe 10 minutes on both sides and do it deeply, not just a light surface rubbing.

P.S. You might want to do this in private. It looks rather...em...how shall we say, "odd" to those who don't understand what you're doing. :D

The FDA pulled Zicam because they had a certain percentage of people losing their sense of smell. Morons probably abusing it. It never worked for me, however. But medications are like that, they work well for one person and not very well for another. Naproxen does nothing for me, Ibuprofen does, and so it goes.

My brother lost his sense of smell for about a month after using Zicam nasal swabs as directed. Thankfully it returned in full.

On topic, I just drink as much orange juice as I can as soon as I start getting a scratchy throat and it usually stops within a day. Also, hot liquids like tea and soup help not necessarily because of what is in the, but because the heat usually kills germs in the mouth and throat, plus the vapor can ease sinus congestion.

As far as I can determine, we can treat the symptoms of a cold but not shorten its duration. I take cough/throat medicine and sleep as much as possible.

Does being wet really cause colds?

As far as I know, neither cold nor wet increase the likelihood you will get sick. However, when it gets colder people tend to stay inside more and interact with other more...therefore the likelihood of getting sick increases due to increased enclosed exposure to others.

A quick cure for coughs, especially when you're trying to sleep. Slather the soles of your feet with Vapo Rub, but on a pair of socks and get under the covers. I thought my mom was nuts when she suggested my wife and I try it last year. Out of desperation I did it one night and within minutes the cough ceased. Its also worked several times since. I know it sounds crazy but it hasn't failed me, my wife or the kids yet. I have know idea why it works.

I also use the hot beer to sweat it out. I also have another drink. hot water mixed with alot of rum and alot of fresh lemonjuice. only the taste will scare off the virusses.
Or you can buy, what they call here, citrosan.

Before when i lived at home my mom used to do some horrible brew.. Cooking garlic with milk, just the smell made feel so good I never had to drink it.
Nowdays I just drink lots of tea with honey and eat garlic pills!

I once went to a health seminar and the lecturer told us if your body doesn't show signs of recovery within 3 days of a cold your immune system is not functioning properly. His whole point being that our immune system is a marvelous defense against intrusion and if we don't abuse our bodies it is more than able to fight off disease.
