Remember the 1980s?

Yup, you’re old. 😁. I cannot complain, I have two hip surgeries, the 2nd in one week.
<---- both knees replaced, one shoulder essentially rebuilt, 2 herniated lumbar discs, and the list goes on. I played high school football -- defensive line -- and thought I was 10 feet tall and bulletproof. By the time I graduated I was so beat up that no college team would have me. When I went for my draft board physical, neither would Uncle Sam.

The smaller knife was purchased outside Camp Lejeune in the early 80’s and used as a knife, prybar, can opener, and shovel. That was back when we didn’t know hollow handled knives we supposed to be weak, those were the days! It’s still with me today.

I will forever have a thing for SAK’s due to the fact that it was my first knife that I got in October 1985. How I adored it. Playing with it , grasping it tightly as I watched ThunderCats and GI Joe after school.

Do they make any sort of high end SAK’s these days? Maybe with titanium? I have the aluminum handled one with grid pattern which I love. And the dark red originals will always be a must-have classic to me.

Ah-HEM!!! The term is "comparatively weak" my friend, and it is still true from a physics standpoint. Yep, one can make a hollow-handled knife that isn't "weak" by normal standards. Yep, there are several classical and modern-day examples. But from the point of sheer physics, even those produced by Chris Reeves (and even our online BladeForums friend Sam Wilson Sam Wilson ) are "comparatively weak" when pitted against a full-tang opponent. etc., etc.

But ya gotta push the tests w-a-a-a-y out there....

That o-so-heavy handle identifies it as one of the many Explorer Survival species that came out of Japan. Overall they weren't bad, but the balance was terrible....!

Still have this one. Everything 10y old me needed.

I'll bet that pencil would be indispensable in a jungle survival situation.

Willing to put your money where your mouth is, so you speak?😃🔥

I don't remember our previous encounter, so I would just add that if somebody's doing more than chin-ups or heavy batoning with their knife, I don't want to know what more they want out of a knife. A knife is to cut, not lever heavy loads.

If we just use physics for this conversation, which would you rather break? A protruding 1" stub of hardened steel or 4" length of hardened steel? I know what physics tells me about levers and length. Nuff said.👍👍

Sam, this is where we "crossed swords" before. The term I used, and will continue to use, is "comparatively weak". It is a simple matter of physics.

'Nuff said?

Yep G.i. Joe and Thunder cats was a heck of a lineup! I think our station had Voltron in there somewhere too.

I only had television for one year in my childhood but it was a good year, and I remember some of those cartoons really vividly. DinoRiders was one of the most memorable for me. Pretty much just a Tyco toy promotional. 1988.

For sure. Not to mention Transformers. My sisters got to watch their shows at 4 o’clock after my shows. But they’d often become distracted by their dolls etc. So when this happened and they were playing in their own little world , I’d casually snag the remote and pop on Transformers and sit there silently enjoying Starscream try to undermine Megatron yet again while my sisters bickered about who’s doll is prettiest or whatever pink toy they were fighting over. Simpler times back then.

Definitely was a good time to grow up.........

Playing Cowboys and Indians , Army , Marines or any soldier play with the coolest cap guns ever.....Anyone remember Lion-O-Matic cap guns with the zig zag cap strips......So cool......I had a Beretta PP, A luger, an m16 and an MP5..........

Today you get arrested for doing the old finger.gun to any wuss, Karen or sexually confused carbon form.!!!

Computers and social media have led to a rounder😉 society........ Moooooo!!!

The army surplus store near me has a very small corner of army issued surplus. The rest of the store became a misc outdoors/hardware store
Most are about the same. They may have some issued stuff, but most of it is used, not surplus.

Back in the day they were buying sealed crates cases barrels etc. Of actual stuff that was unused and being sold off by the government. Actual surplus. By the 1980’s it was drying up.

I remember that one also, although I have to admit I focused on G.I. Joe. I still have a pile of those around in a box in very good condition. Turns out these days they are worth more than some of my knives.

Can't believe I forgot to mention that one too! Do kids even play with toys anymore? I think it's all screens now.

Seriously. What happened to action figures and cartoons? It’s a different world now. As I type this , my 12 year old is glued to his iPad and my 8 year old is locked on to his PS5 playing Fortnite with kids from across the country. Sometimes it all seems crazy. I got us all Nintendo Switch Lites. They never touch theirs. Too “babyish” they say. I love mine. So a couple times a month when I have a free hour or two , I can play old school games like Mario , Zelda and Street Fighter.

Back to knives , I always wanted a butterfly knife back in the late 80’s. Still wanna give one a try. And now that I’m an adult , no one can tell me “No , it’s too dangerous” 😊
