removed from NEW CRK Impofu

It's a trademark. Mr. Reeve had the option of legally protecting the RIL and chose not to do so. That hardly makes other things fair game.

Does that mean every fixed blade with a hole in the guard is a trademark violation....?? I love both Busse & CRK, so it's indifferent to me. I actually liked the knife immediately and did not even notice the "hole" till it was brought up....!!!

Looks good!

I see both sides of the argument. It is just a hole, but at the same time Jerry felt that the feature was important enough to apply for a registered trademark. So as far as I'm concerned it is his. To me the hole is useless, and I would rather not have them.

Yes. If you see one with a talon hole please report it to Busse if you don't mind.

I love them both too.
IMO CRK(by far) makes the best production folders, and Busse makes the best production fixed blades.
I even prefer the Sebenza over any Custom folder, and also prefer large Busse's over any large Custom fixed blades.

I'm thinking Chris had no idea that Busse had a registered trademark on the talon hole. I don't think he would knowingly use a registered trademark feature of another knifemaker.

I didn't notice the hole either until it was mentioned :p I was to busy checking out this glorious beast of a knife to notice a little hole ! It is a real beauty for sure

Agreed. I don't think this was done intentionally, but my mind would be much more at ease of Mr. Reeve would chime in.

It's not a trademark. It's a registered trademark. Like it or. to, there is a legal difference for both parties. For Busse, legally, they either enforce their rights or they lose them. It's a sign of his good will and community spirit that Chris Reeve never tried to put legal protection on the frame lock, but it also means that people aren't ripping him off when they copy the frame lock.

Do we know for sure that Chris didn't try to patent the frame lock? Maybe he did but was rejected due to frame locks being so similar. I mean all a frame lock is, is a thick liner without a scale. Not putting down the frame lock. Great idea and beautiful knives. I personally own at least 10 frame locks. 2 of which are CRK. But people approving patents might not see it as patentable. Let's also keep in mind the difference between a utility patent and a design patent.

For me, I give Chris the benefit of the doubt. There is no way he would rip off another knifemaker's design. If it is a registered trademark then I'm sure he discussed it with Jerry.

A Busse is more than a talon hole just like a CRK is more than a frame lock.

Regardless, that thing is a beast! I wish I had gone to Blade now, I'd love to see how it feels in the hand...and then I could also ask Chris about the hole :)

I just find it very strange that with as hard as the real industry innovators work for their designs, patents and trademarks that one would rip off another. That to me is for the bottom feeding knock off companies. Because of how much both companies get their stuff ripped off I am thinking this hole must have been cleared by Busse Combat. Really hoping it was. Really hoping it might be the behind closed doors start of a colab folder between the two.

I really don't understand why everyone ASSUMES Chris knows a hole is trademarked or not

I find it hard to believe Chris wouldn't know about the Busse talon hole. I mean they ARE in the knife business. They do shows together. They both win awards. They have both been making knives for decades. They both get articles in Blade all the time. Are you really saying Chris doesn't research what others in the business are doing? Even without researching, he is likely to stumble into info about Busse. To me that's quite a stretch to say Chris doesn't know about the Busse talon hole. MAYBE he asked for permission. Ignorant? I don't see it. I own 2 businesses. I know more about my competitors than any of their customers do. That's a FACT!!! I don't even have to go out of my way to find out. Just talk to my sales reps, dealers, suppliers, etc....everyone loves to gossip. Trust me. He knows about it.

I agree on giving Chris the maximum benefit of the doubt.

Maybe its that he is too busy concentrating on his own perfection that he just does not know every "do-dad" every one else is putting on theirs. I have been heavily into knives for 30 years and I am sure I do not know what others are doing...........I am sure that if it does become an issue ( I believe this is ALL gettng blown way out of proportion ), he will remove it. I have multiple CRK AND Busse and I did not even notice the "hole" until people brought it up. I was more thinking what I could do with it on the woods.

I'm reminded of the words of Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read after shooting Sydney Collins....."all that fuss over such a little hole".

Well yeah. Would we expect a CRK fanboy to defend Busse?

:D....I'm hardly a CRK "fanboy", the Busse fanboys can do that for themselves anyway. I'm sure the hole will be gone by the time the noise is over so don't worry. :)

Why are you even posting in here, just to stir up more of that fuss I take it ?.....

Are we posting about a new knife or about each other? Maybe I should remove the off-topic posts.

We're trying to talk about the knife, and it's illegal missing part, but there is someone who keeps standing up shouting "fanboy" getting in the way. :)

Nope. I don't "keep" saying fanboy. Said it once. And I was sitting. And I didn't shout.
