Reno Knife Lost!!

I would seriously consider shipping / mailing knives to and from shows rather than checking them with the airlines. A Jay Hendrickson hunter ordered aprox. 4 1/2 years ago which I picked up from Jay at the show was stolen form my checked luggage yesterday.
I'm thankful that a new Harvey Dean Fighter (packed right beside) was not taken and I realize much worst things could have happened on my trip, however I'm very angry and upset not at just the lost but the lack of interest by TSA.
Here's the details from an eariler post.

I packed it in my checked luggage along side the Dean Diablo and when I picked up at baggage claim I looked inside and both cases were there.
When I got home I found the Hendrickson case was empty. They did not take the Dean. Thank god. I suspect they left it because it was too large for them to conceal and sneak out of the airport. They did not take the sheath either as it was in a different part of the suitcase.
I have been in contact with both Continental Airlines and TSA and both are trying to pass it off on the other. TSA says I can file a claim, wait 3 weeks for a claim # so I can track the investigation which could take six months. They said they didn't inspect the bag (only x-rayed it) since it did not have a notification left in it. I think if I stole something out of someone's bag I wouldn't leave a notice that I opened it either.
I had it photographed by Point Seven at the show which may help. I will call my insurance company and my attorney tomorrow to see what my options are.
It's ironic as several makers and myself were talking at breakfast Friday morning about shipping vs checked luggage and insurance and such. I had actually brought a box and packing to mail knives home, but changed my mind and decided to check them rather than going to the Post Office.
I will keep you informed as I get additional information.

Unless they can determine who took the knife, no one will be held responsible. Hopefully there was extra insurance obtained for the knives purchased at the show. Damn, this blows.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Kevin, and after such a long wait. At least they weren't both stolen. Hopefully this thief will come to justice one way or the other...

Kevin, Sorry about the loss of your Jay Hendrickson knife. I think that the notification that the TSA was talking about was the fact that you had knives in your luggage. If you told them there is probably more chance of something not showing up. If you post a picture maybe someone will see it when the thief tries to get rid of it. Good luck with the insurance. based on what was stolen from Ken Onion's bag and the response from the TSA and airlines, I'd say you're screwed.

I'm thinking that if I go to another fly in show, I'm going to trust Fedex and insure the crap out of my knives.

Super sorry for your loss, man!

Couple of things......

1. Flew out, bag was FULL of knives, both ways, as you know. Nothing was taken.

2. Did you happen to fly out via the Bay Area/San Francisco? I think that is where Ken Onion got his knives stolen from. I absolutely refuse to fly into San Francisco with knives, and frankly, can't stand the place anyway.

3. Unless an act of G-D intervenes, CIA will replace the price of the knife that got stolen. Now, here's the good part; as you know, knifemakers as a group are more decent than most, being hard-working people, by necessity. This said, I'll bet that Jay would drop what he is doing to make a replacement for your knife, and because it is serious business, might even make it better than the original. You'll have to talk to him about that one.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

You should post that picture of it here, that way the rest of us can be on the lookout for. It could show up on ebay or even someone's local pawnshop.

Thanks for your comments.
Jim,TSA X-rays all checked luggage and also opens and inspects many. They have to leave a notification in the bag if they in fact open it. Since there was no notification left they say no one opened it. Obviously someone did.
After I get the photos back from Point Seven, I will send them to all the online dealers in hopes someone may try to sell it. But as Lin mentioned on another post, they will most likely pawn it. I will speak to my attorney tomorrow about offering a reward. Perhaps someone working in Reno, Houston or Richmond Va airports may have seen something that will help. Even though it’s insured, I’m not going to let this go.

Hi STeven.
I haven't talked to Jay yet. I'm sure he's still in Reno. I will contact him tomarrow. You are right about Knife Makers, haven't met one yet that wasn't as decent as the day is long.

Horrible Violation
Last time I flew was on a trip o Paris I had my Fuegen Folder and a Lochsa hidden in a zipper lining of my suitcase when I got home both were sitting on top of my folded clothes...
I dont think I will travel with cherished customs anymore...
I hope there is some form of Retribution for you

I'm also sorry to hear about this.

We've got to become more careful with our knives in checked
baggage because as the air travel laws have tightened, the baggage inspectors
have become very aware that certain valuables MUST be in
checked bags if they are anywhere at all. (Valuables like our knives,
for example.)

And their are theives among the inspectors, for sure.

I've been traveling by plane less frequently, and when I do,
I pack a couple of Spydies at most. I used to bring a Becker BK7 too,
but now tha those are becoming scarce, I'll have to find some substitute
for it as well.

If I want to bring something I important to me, for instance a custom
necker, I'll ship it FEDEX insured from now on. It will have a much better chance of arriving than in airline-checked baggage.

Well, this is bad news and real FRUSTRATING! I get the impression from Steven's post that you have CIA coverage? (Collectibles Insurance Agency) Smart move.

Having that photographed will easily fulfill their requirements. Smart twice.

I always get my knife purchases photographed at shows as it's so convenient. However, I don't expect a photographer to spend as much time as he would in his studio considering how busy they are at shows.

There's a small chance this photo may be helpful in catching this bastard as well as with the insurance and with Jay reproducing it.

bummer deal bubba. I know that hurts after waiting for so long.
I am in the belief that markers should give or offer the postion of also handleing the shipping from the show to the new owner. Maybe some shows will still up and offer shipping. I think a couple do, or at least did.
Ijust ups my knives and bag when flying. Collectors can ask the makers to ship the knife to him when he goes hom. Bummer deal, just try to keep from getting mad all over.

Horrible experience. Last time I went to Reno I carried a gun case. Those are handled separately by the TSA and are held in a (somewhat) secured area upon arrival (even though mine didn't have any gun in it...) That might be a good option too.

Needless to say you should get the basic version of the pic from Point Seven ASAP and post it right away.
