Reno Knife Lost!!

Last time I went to Reno I carried a gun case. Those are handled separately by the TSA and are held in a (somewhat) secured area upon arrival (even though mine didn't have any gun in it...) That might be a good option too.

Man thats a great idea..

I shipped mine from shows.Sure is a screwed up world we live in .These clowns in security are american citizens.Shame on them

Sorry to hear of ANOTHER of these losses. I have heard of quite a few similar stories. Seems like people that work in Security with access to airline baggage have a 'license to steal'.

Hope it works out for the best.

Peter

For those of you who don't mind, a good solution might be to actually bring in a small handgun. I can guarantee that your case will be handled completely differently if there's a gun in it. Of course, that's mostly practical for domestic flights.

I have heard that a good "hack" on this is to bring a starter pistol! 50-state legal, requires no permit, yet TSA applies the same level of security and lockdown as they would a real firearm. You have to declare it at the ticket agent's counter, I believe, and provide a non-TSA lockable case for it.

Very sorry to hear about this. This is a disturbing trend we're beginning to see here. :(

Are they a good company for knives and collectibles?

We will soon find out.
I contacted CIA today to report the lost. As they are an insurance agency, I was told the actual carrier will contact me after they receive the report. I was told I have to file a claim with Continental Airlines as they are whom my ticket was purchased from and responsible (not TSA). When reporting the loss to Continental on Saturday night I was told that TSA was the responsible party.
The gun case idea makes a lot of sense.
I contacted Point Seven about getting the photo quickly. Eric was traveling back from Reno today, however they assured me it would be sent ASAP.
I will contact Jay tonight as I assume they were traveling today as well.
Thanks for all your comments and support. I'm not quite as angry today, It's just the way things are. You have good and honest people then there are the others.

I hope it works out for you bud. Having recently been the victim of theft, I can relate to how PO'ed you must be.

That sucks, man!!!!!! :barf: Reading the Ken Onion saga led me to beleibve that, as has been the case in the past, his knives and yours were proobably stoeln by an airline or airport employee. The scary part is that TSA told Ken that once they do their checks, the have no control over the bags. I'm not sure if this was TSA just trying to blame the airline, but if it is true, imagine what would happen if a "sleeper" was able to get a job in baggage handling and slip something bad onto the airport......or make a device from chemicals and parts readily available on the field. yipe!!!!!

very bad news..........however.

The gun idea might be true for one airport, but I bring a Pelican gun case with me often to Blade, with a gun and my knives inside, and it comes onto the rotating luggage area just like the rest of the stuff..........

In Atlanta, Nashville, Los Angeles, SF, and Vegas........those are all the airports I have used this method.

Tom,

The case I use is for a rifle actually - it's long. Maybe that's why it's held in a separate area.

Pelican cases are great, but the rifle cases are super-heavy. I have a cheapo case for going to knife shows.

That does stink! Caffrey carries a pistol with his knives and they just keep it locked. Sounds like a good idea. They never opened mine either. I did declare I had a pistol/folder when I checked it in.

Here's a photo of the lost Hendrickson Southwest Skinner.
I designed it as a medium to showcase Jay's multiple talents as an artist
and knifemaker. In addition, it's apple seed grind, thick 1/4" blade steel
@ the spine, comfort / control in hand offered by the stout handle, palm
swell and crown stag butt, would enable it to handle any skinning job in the field.

Basically, an art piece which will perform and is very capable of hard use in the field.
This piece describes what I look for in a knife.

Blade Length - 4.75”
Over All Length - 9.50”
Handle Material - Curly Maple / Crown Stag
Fittings - Nickel Silver w/ Filework
Jay's Random Pattern damascus
Fine Silver Wire Inlay, Turquoise worked in Navaho Motif.
Nickel Silver carved Arrowhead in crown stag.

The Swine has no clue what he has..Kevin I hope that this is resolved to your satisfaction.
Lovely Knife

I posted the comment/question below in the other thread about this sad and disgusting situation, but there was no reply. So I am putting it in this thread as I am really curious to the answer (I will be travelling with knives soon and am planning on using luggage with TSA locks as I have done in the past). So sorry in advance for the double post.

I am really sorry to hear about this Kevin.

I also heard about Onion's loss while I was at the Plaza show.

I have a dumb question:
Was Onion's luggage and your luggage (Kevin) locked when it was checked at the counter? If so, the TSA shouldn't have a leg to stand on.

I'm sorry, for not answering your first post. After I started this thread, your post on the other slipped by me.
Not sure about Ken, but I did not have a lock. I had actually brought a box and package material with me to Reno in my luggage to mail my knives home. Which is what I normally do. There's a post office only a few blocks down the street form the Silver Legacy hotel. However, it's ironic that Harvey Dean, JW Randall, Dickie Robinson, Steve Dunn and myself were speaking of shipping knives vs checking at breakfast Friday morning and after that conversation I just decided to put them in my luggage. I figured most people check there knives, there's probably only a small risk they would be taken and they are insured, plus I was very busy Friday and my flight left too early on Saturday morning to drop them by the Post Office.
As for the locks, lets face it, the only purpose they serve is to let you know that someone has been in your bag if it's broken. Since they generally attached to the zipper pulls, you can break them off with your bare hands in most cases. And as you said, you have to use TSA locks as they have to be able to open your bag. If I had to guess, I would say TSA is most likely responsible for my lost, even though I'm being told to file a claim against Continental. Let's face it. You are taking a chance whether you ship them or check them. I'm convinced the dishonest know when knife, jewelry, stamp or whatever shows are in town and they try to profit from them.

First off, I am truly sorry for your loss, Kevin...

We don't know each other, but I, too, collect.
However, if I can't drive to the show, I probably won't attend, for the very reason you've experienced.

If most of you don't know it by now, please understand that the TSA does not handle your baggage... Subcontractors to the airlines and airports do... And they aren't vetted by the TSA, nor do they get screened as passengers do - they walk thru a gate, go back behind the scenes and handle your luggage... And in this case, rifle your luggage looking for valuables.

Out here in Seattle, one of the local TV stations did an "expose" on what actaully happens to your luggage once it's been checked through the ticketing booth. Pretty scary - if you think they can take something out, why should we feel safe that someone doesn't actually ADD something to your luggage... with a pressure switch set to go off at some point further down your trip? In essence, this makes the whole farcical show of screening passengers to be an insult to our intelligence - we are no safer flying now that we were prior to 9/11, and if you think so, you haven't actully opened your eyes to the reality of American Air Travel...

My only suggestion to those of you who do insist on flying is to support your local Post Office or Fed Ex or UPS or Dhl... or do as I have chosen to do - drive...

I hope, Kevin, as do I hope for Ken Onion, that there is a happy reunion with your prize... But in todays climate, I kinda doubt it...

BTW - did anyone else catch the story out of, IIRC, Dallas, about the hundreds of suitcases they found in a couple of contractor garbage bins? All from international flights, several that never even went thru DFW? As I recall, they actually arrested several people in connection with that... All baggage handlers, none of them employed, or vetted, by TSA...

And the problem for me, is that I actually love to fly! :grumpy:
