Hi SAL, love my Chinook3, was wondering if i could purchase a "spare" Chinook3 blade - i have a mod in mind that i want to do, and that you might like to try ;)

I'm not Sal, but AFAIK, Spyderco has never sold spare or replacement blades for any model.

well, not too keen on trying this mod on my new Chinook, so i'm going to take my old beat but servicable endura clipit and do the mod on that blade to start.......

stay tuned for pics!

Well that would be cheating if you could just ask the manufacturer to supply you with a blade (whether you purchase it or not), and then you go and make your own custom handle and all. I could imagine that that would be a reason not to sell blades separately.

That would be like... Well this is probably a poor analogy, but I guess you could say it's like taking your own burger buns and lettuce and tomatoes to McDonalds and then asking them to supply you with patties separately, and you'll pay for the patties!

So it's understandable, if you ask me.

Since you like Mods why not use the Manix as a basis? I think a plain edge Manix custom recurve(gets rid of the serrations) would be awesome if done well.

I recently traded for a partially serrated Manix. I don't care for serrated knives and only made the trade because the Manix is no longer made and almost impossible to aquire.

Wrote to SAL and told him the story and requested a plain edge blade. I said I would pay for the blade and install it at my expense. Nary a peep from Spyderco. Sal never even responded to my e-mail. I only learned through this thread that Sypderco doesn't sell replacement blades.

Now I am doubled bummed. No replacement plain edge blade for my Manix AND poor customer service from Spyderco.

WOW! You consider the lack of a response by the OWNER of a company to a single email sent directly to him, rather than to Customer Service to be "poor customrer service". Never mind that it may have gotten lost in a SPAM filter somewhere. Never mind that it may be in a queue of emails to be answered, since you mention that you only "recently" acquired the Manix. Never mind that this question has been answered a fair number of times over the years for other models, and the answer has always been "no". So please pretend you're hearing the world's smallest violin playing Hearts and Flowers as you read this.

Also, if they sent you a blade, then it has to be mated to the lock bar. Is that something you are proficient in? I think that is no easy task, seeing as how the people in Seki sometimes don't get it 100% right, and they do it for a living. I think it would be cheaper, and safer to look for the blade configuration you really want.

ok ok ok, i want to cut out part of the Spydie hole and flatten the hump a bit to "wave" it (no I aint using a ziptie to make a "wave")

:)

Many people have done this kind of thing on knives with thumb holes as blade openers. I've seen some people do this on Benchmade Skirmishes.

From the sound of that, you are planning to do exactly what Sal asked people to stop doing, which was why he developed and released the waved knives.

Nooo Bushman5, don't do it !!!

I was in a "wave fever" not too long ago and I ended up ruining the trade/resale values of several knives that I owned. Needless to say, I now have spare parts for my enduras. Don't get me wrong, they turned out great at first, but then I got off the "wave fever" and realized what I had done.

If you are really sure about what you are doing then go for it, but if you ever need spare blades for an endura just pm or email me.

Since you are going through with it, what method are you going to use?

I used a dremel with a metal cut off wheel, then finished rounding off the curve of the wave with a green ceramic grinding bit (dremel bits). I actually didn't cut the round hole at all, I cut into the metal before the hole and let the top of the wave be the round part above the thumb hole (kind of confusing, even I had to re-read this). I left the hole in-tact and cut around it so that I could have both the wave and the hole for one hand opening.

Let me know if this helps give you an idea, J.

dremel was the #1 idea, followed by some hand filing and 3M wet/dry silicon paper to round everything nicely!

You might want to consider asking STR, who has his own forum here in the Makers section, if he could wave your Chinook for you and what he would charge to do so. He is licensed by Emerson and, assuming there's enough meat there for him to agree to wave it, does it without cutting into the Spyderhole.
