Reprofiling

We have talked frequently about reprofiling a blade. So I played with one today.

A tip got broken off of one of my 470's.

So I thought I would play with it versus sending it back to Buck. It didn't take all that much time using the coarse diamond hone in the Lansky clamp.

Here is the reprofiled blade and a normal 470. I like it as it looks like it might give more of a skinner type edge, like on a 103. Going to take it out tomorrow in the event we get something.

Great job Ratty. What is the difference in the 470 and the 475?

470 is larger...at about 5 1/4 inch blade...or so... I am out in the rv and don't have the 470 handy. Nor have a 475 out here , so maybe someone will jump in with the diff....

4:30 comes early....Nite...

Nice job, Pack Rat. I bought a 120 and a 192 from the bay with broken tips. Got a good price and I wanted to try to reprofile a knife. They came out a lot like yours. The blade just isn't as pointy.

Ed, I could have put the same curve and point on it as the regular 470. Just wanted to play with the curve some. Stick some pics in here of your 120 and 129.

I may still profile that one to look more like it is supposed to, if I don't like the curve I have on it. But will wait to try some deer skinning before I decide. Or give it back to mom and let her play with it in the kitchen for a while.

And,,,,while I was honeing it, Mom and the kids were in the kitchen putting out thanksgiving dinner together. And some how, one of my AG rubber Vanguards made its way in there. I think it is being held ransom till the 470 returns...lol

You are right Larry. The blade on the 475 is 3 3/8" long.The 470 is 5 1/4"

Thanks for shairing.

I actually like the look of your re-profile more than Buck's original shape... :)

...And it looks familiar (well, not your pic, but the shape)...I think there was a question during the Summer about an eBay auction with a blade that looked like it had been shortened but the auction owner denied it...

Anyway, that looks pretty nice...I wonder if a shortened & "Pack Rat Profiled" 110 blade shaped like that and put in a 112 frame would look as nice... :p

Pack Rack, I took pictures of both knives with an unmodified one next to it. The pictures can be found on my Multiply site edbeau.multiply.com. I have had trouble posting here. If someone knows how, move them to here.

:eek::eek::eek: Sacrilege,,,,,to do that to a 110 :rolleyes: :D:D

I'll check them out when I get back home on the desktop machine. Sounds interesting!!!

Trax,,,,that reprofile thing reminds me of a 103. some, kinda, sorta

Hey Ratty. How does the 470's compair to the 110's with bg-42,s30v,and
cpm154? I would think that you have to resharpin sooner.

Welll,,,,same as comparing any 420hc to the premium steels. Naturally doesn't stay as sharp as long, but sharpens up a lot faster.

I learned that the 470 sharpens up even faster using the diamond hones. Just have to watch out and not get into removing too much steel.

Naturally the big fixed blade 470 doesn't compare to a 110 as far as knives go. Its a heavy duty cutter if you are doing some serious work. The son in law used one of them to carve up the Thanksgiving bird. But even then, he switched over to an electric knife as the particular 470 he was using was dull.

The 470 won't make the same cuts the thinner bladed 121 will, when peeling out a backstrap, or separating the quarters. Well,,,it will, but just not as well.

I have watched mother consistently use a 470 or the 471 I put in her knife drawer, over any of her other knives.

Oh,,,the S30V rubber vanguard I put in her drawer,,,,I have seen it go through the dishwasher a couple of times now. Looked at it yesterday and shows no ill effect.

That reprofiled 470 has been out on the counter top near every time I go in the ktchen.... Maybe I need to get the other ones sharpened up

trax my friend .. a 110 and a 112 blade are not interchangeable..
diff are the nock on the blade is very diff
and position of hole relating to the blade stop nock..
it would require a lot of work to get then to interchange..
were they have a 110 / 112 twin blade knife
the rocker is hand made to fit the 112.
DarrelS showed me this in Florida when i stopped in at his house..
but i see the :p and fig you knew this already ...
but many newbies dont..

O.K. Ratty, Thanks for that review on the 470.I'll quit now.;)

I don't want what happened to the 121 so show up on it (470) too.

Um...No, Dave...You are wrong again...

And I've built several 110/112 combos, as well as 426/442 combos...and the only real difference in the *blade* is the length...Rocker bars are longer, but the notches, tangs, bushings, choil, etc are all similar...

Reprofiling a 110 to the Ratty Profile and mounting in a 112 is very do-able...since all you are doing is grinding ~3/4" off the tip of the 110... :)

Here's an idea...Let's do a "Group Build"...I can donate a new "Idaho" 110 blade w/bushing and a pair of used 112 liners (with or without Buck scales)...Let's talk Ratty into re-profiling the 110 (grind the tip to the same profile as his 470 re-profile), and if we can come up with a 2005-era 112 rockerbar, spring, and spacer, I'll put it back together...then we need to talk Flatlander into mounting a couple scales on it... ;)

...And we'll have a Custom 112 to give away at some future date... :D

I'll do the scale...no problem. I'll pick some scale choices and show them and let you guys decide. g

Question: Would the reprofiled blade still lay down inside without a tip sticking out ??

Sure, I could do that, but so can anyone with a Lansky or one of the other clamp or other systems. Or whatever one knows how to do that with.

I am still out in the country and don't have a 112 along to compare to.

Crude photoshop on this laptop touch pad.
I don't think I took enough off as compared to the 112 blade

I believe the point on your photoshop image would be sticking above the frame of the 112. I think some of the top would have to go.
