Reprofiling

Would this work?

Rat Pack,

I was thinking of width or height of the tip relative to the blade's edge. Here is what I'm talking about:
Broke the tip off on a crab trap in Whiskey Pass about 16 years ago. This is my reprofile job. I like the shape but not so good in the pocket.

Ratty has it right...grinding down the choil a bit will let the blade tip sit inside the frame...but too much, and the edge will hit the rockerbar (or the spacer)...

It wouldn't do to shorten a 110 blade and then have to thin it and end up with exactly the profile of a 112...

Oh, well...I'll find something to do with all these parts...maybe a 4-blade 110/112/426/442... :D

Lots and lots of measurments. A cardboard template? Or one seriously fat 4 blader...:D:D Way out of my league now...

Get to grinding Flats! I bet you can get that tip on down inside.

Yea, I missed my chance to do it right by not going at it from the topside. But it was my first effort years back at such a thing. Heck, I'm kind of partial to it now.

Um...No, Dave...You are wrong again...

And I've built several 110/112 combos, as well as 426/442 combos...and the only real difference in the *blade* is the length...Rocker bars are longer, but the notches, tangs, bushings, choil, etc are all similar...

Reprofiling a 110 to the Ratty Profile and mounting in a 112 is very do-able...since all you are doing is grinding ~3/4" off the tip of the 110... :)

Here's an idea...Let's do a "Group Build"...I can donate a new "Idaho" 110 blade w/bushing and a pair of used 112 liners (with or without Buck scales)...Let's talk Ratty into re-profiling the 110 (grind the tip to the same profile as his 470 re-profile), and if we can come up with a 2005-era 112 rockerbar, spring, and spacer, I'll put it back together...then we need to talk Flatlander into mounting a couple scales on it... ;)

...And we'll have a Custom 112 to give away at some future date... :D
well 'similar' is 'close' i recently sat with both and fitted rockers to blades and noted minor differences. not necessary enough that they wont work but enough to me that they were not quite right..
now if you file on the notch of the 110 it will fit much better to the 112 rocker which is wider..
it is the 112 that will be a rather hard fit to an 110 as the rocker notch on a 110 is not as wide.. that fit will be loose..
but yes you are right a 110 can go in to a 112 with some mods and still be tight..it is not a straight swap..
instead of a full ratty what of a tanto shape ?
that is what i thought of that profile when i first seen it
humm almost a tanto..more kinda like a rounded tanto..
if no one takes you up on the re-profiling of the 110 ,, heck i will try it ! :)

Pack Rack, I took pictures of both knives with an unmodified one next to it. The pictures can be found on my Multiply site edbeau.multiply.com. I have had trouble posting here. If someone knows how, move them to here.

Ed, You did a really nice job on your profiling!!! Both look real good.
I took the liberty of sticking them in here.

Hawkeye

Also why don't you ask Tin Sue who gets the Rubber Bucky next,:D

Some of you apparently didn't get in on the BCCI 110 and 112 drop points.

bummer.....:eek::D

Huh! I wonder where those of us that missed out on the initial offer could find a set of those spiffy looking BCCI Sambar Stag S30V bladed drop points...

I'll bet they are collector's items now... :)

...hmmm...I just might know of someone that may have a set of those lyin' around somewhere that he's thinkin' of gettin' rid of...I'm gonna have to think real hard...
