Requesting: CS Black Sable review

I think this is a GBU thread, but I'll go ahead and reply. :D

There's no doubt good and honest people work for CS. Just like I'm sure good and honest people worked for Enron and MCI. But it doesn't change what the company as a whole is doing. Has CS fallen to the same level as the companies hat import blatant copeis from china? not yet, but at the rate they are going a few years from now maybe. I think these issues we all can agree on:

- Many people don't like LT and his method of advertising.

- All the riposte stuff is not philosophically consistent. It doesn't matter as it's probably just Lynn's rant o the month column.

- CS is consistetnly using lesser quality steels, this trend is continuing.

- CS tries to "brand" their steel by using made up names. Which works. but only on those who are uneducated.

- The quality of their knives vary, but as far as folders go, they are just middle of the road.

- You can argue little ity bity differences, but every year lately they have been essentially coping other people's designs. They used to innovate more then copy, but not anymore.

In summary, I think people on this forums "expect more" from a knife company, that likely makes us snobs. Shrug.

Respectfully, DngrRuss1, how can we give weight to your opinions when you admit bias and give no first-hand facts? While you have as much right as anyone to express those opinions, that they are dismissed should be no surprise. Honest expression of lack of objectivity does not create credibility (any more than does alleged objectivity belied by behavior).

As for CS's alleged dedication to quality, the record seems pretty clear that they sell some good tools and sell some that are much less than they could be -- even considering price -- in terms of design, materials, and/or execution. Dedication to quality typically does not produce perfection, but it should result in a more consistent performance. It's just my opinion, but CS seems dedicated to hype as a marketing plan. (They are not alone in that.)

"Rip-off"? That is purely a matter of opinion. You have every right to your admittedly biased opinion. The two knives appear to me to be brothers, although not identical twins. I don't like the way either of them looks, but that's just me.

Russell's behavior reminds me of a boxer that gets up and starts punching after he's had the 10-count.

Why do you continue to argue when some very respected and knowledgable forumites have told you that this is clearly a RIP-OFF!!! Or a copy or whatever. You are entitled to your opinion but, you really need to quit doing this:

Reguardless of content, this is the funniest thing I have ever seen, LMAO!!!

I'm still laughing!

I don't like Cold Steel OR the knife.. either version..

hope this angers everyone equally. :D

sure looks like a ripoff to ME, how'ld you make something that ugly by accident?

I can understand a knifeman desperately searching for a new idea that was Cool and inventing that (*shudder*) pig-inna-tutu.

But: far as Cold steel, they make a couple cheap knives that are worth the money, mostly they're a junk distributor. (overpriced for performance = junk)

And thiefin an idea ima betcha is JUST what happened, and i'm gonna betcha another thing, and i have no clue, so may be 180 out.. i'm gonna betcha you can find OTHER designs they stole.

That's a wild shot in the dark.

Anyone want to confirm or deny?

Talk about a thread being higjacked. I have to make a few points here. Cold Steel is not necessarily overpriced junk. I don't own most of their product line. I'm not a Cold Steel collector. I'm not even a devoted fan. I have a few Cold Steel knives, that's it. But the amount of hatred displayed toward them at Bladeforums irks me because it borders on fanaticism.

  1. The Voyager is generally considered to be a good value. Even Cliff had good things to say about it.
  2. The SRK seems to be thought of as a good value by most who own them.
  3. Cold Steel markets some of the strongest liner locks in their price range. Compare the lock of a Ti-Light VI to the lock on your favorite $80 liner lock. Hell, compare it to your favorite $160 liner lock.
  4. Cold Steel has some products that are very similar to other companies' products. Are you saying that Buck doesn't? What about SOG? Why is Cold Steel singled out? From the way you folks talk, they should have been sued into bankrupcy by now.

And someone asked why they don't have a forum here. Why have a forum that's just going to be filled up with "I hate Cold Steel posts"? You can't even post a request for a review apparently without pages of "Lynn is a thief" and "Cold Steel is overpriced" and "I don't own any CS products but I hate them anyways" and "I hate their advertising". A forum here??? Yeah right. Get a life people. There seems to be less hatred for United Cutlery and Frost than for Cold Steel. That's irrational in my view.

didnt CS rip off the emerson"wave"? i thought i remember'd reading that somewhere. thats when i called bull crap on cold steel and lost some respect for them.

I have a suggestion. Why not start a legal defense fund to raise money for lawyers to sue Cold Steel on behalf of all the designers they've ripped off? Start a "Say No to Cold Steel" campaign with bumper stickers. A real grass roots effort. If everthing is true, don't you owe it to the knife industry and knife collector community to do this?

Gutsy,

They didn't steal the Wave's visual design, but they now advertize at least three sets of knives (Ti-Lites, AK-47s, Talwars) which can operate in the same manner. With the AK-47 and Talwar the design and its advertizing appear blatantly used though the devices look a little more dressed up on the Cold Steel versions. Upsets me because I really like the Talwar's design and the recognition of intellectual property rights (so no Talwar for me).
