Research and Development

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I think that it has been very productive (give or take an apparent rant on my part) and on that basis, very productive to this point.

I was lookin' for something else and found this. I thought it could use a bump given the new colour spectrum at Busse. Hmmmm.

Cheers,
BJB :D

Thanks BJB-

I'm going to have some shots of the new finishes on the site soon so people can get a better idea of some finish/handle combinations on the NO and AD.

These combos are HOT, keep an eye out!

Has any further thought/work been done regarding the "non-tactical : more practical" finish ideas? I can't think of any reasonable situation where I need a camo knife, but can think of quite a few where a high-visibility handle would be very handy...something in orange, yellow, or perhaps bright blue. I imagine there are many folks like me that would prefer a more sheeple-friendly looking knife to one that looks like something designed for killing sentries while hanging upside-down from a rope. Could we get a brown handle and silver or grey finish on the blade, to look more like a "normal" knife?

I'll see if I can talk Jerry into making a Blaze Orange micarta option. I would like to see this one myself. :D

i was thinking about this at work, and so far the only coating ive seen thats real camo is the strider mcsocom folder, with its water pattern... not to sure as to how effective it is, but it definitely looked like water reflections on a wall...

This is a great thread. Jsut the kind of input Jerry needs to see.

The new colour offerings are actually in line with the camo jobs you see on the fighting weaponry currently in use. Like Spearhead brought up in his first post, pure black is not a naturally occurring colour.

Too, Matteo's (and others) desire for a hi-viz finish is definitely dead-nuts on. The S&R, firefighter, and non-tactical outdoor crowd would benefit from this option. It also reflects feedback I receive at almost every show I set up at, about the consumer desire for, at minimum, hi-viz handles to help cut the ease of loss due to environmental blend-in. Some have sugested the orange, others the greenish-yellow colour used on some fire vehicles.

Again, great thread. Thanks Spearhead.

From a printers standpoint the black thing is easy. Cost. Carbon Black is cheap. Black ink is the cheapest with PMS (Pantone Matching System) being the most expensive. All the other ingredients being pretty much the same, pigments dictate the cost. Ever see tires in colors? When you are buying pigment by the ton even a few pennies/lb adds up real quick.

I also like the Desert Tan. Not only is the color cooler, but the finish is tougher than the black crinkle coat. This has just been my observation mainly from the Rats. Haven't beat too much on my tan Busses.

For the High Vis thing, it's doable, but the cost would be out of this world unless several makers/companies could agree on a color to justify a large enough run of either blade coating stuff or handle material.

that, or if you could  theoretically  come up with a set up to make your own dye's/inks, with the primary ingrediants being what you buy instead of the end product... but thats another one of those initial cost vs. end result things... wether or not it would be worth starting up an ink sectino of the shop, i dont know... you could however sell the ink to the rest of the knife industry :D

I know that safety orange or firetruck yellow would be high visibility (unless dropped in leaves in Autumn, perhaps), but I mentioned bright blue for a reason... I know that SOMEONE makes G-10 in bright blue.

Of course, this is mostly academic to me since (unless something changes in my life) I'm not going to be buying a new Busse any time soon. But hey, I can hope that some of the "high visibility color" technology will trickle down to the Swamp.... :D

There's a small knife manufacturer up in Escanaba, MI, Bark River Knife and Tool, who made several runs of their prototypes and first production runs with orange micarta handles. While it does sound a bit, er, "different" at first, it's actually not a bad looking knife in orange.

I looked around a bit and couldn't find a decent photo, all the ones I found had poor color balance and didn't look "real". Sorry. :(

I also saw one of the Bark River prototypes in blue G-10 yesterday. Personally, I think blue G-10 looks pretty darn good on the right knife.

Having used an older orange handle Spyderco Rescue Jr. in "public" on a number of occasions, in spite of the serrations, people didn't seem to have a problem with it. Granted, it came out of my crash bag, and it wasn't the full-size Rescue, but the orange kinda gave it a "helpful" or "safety" persona rather than what a mean and evil black handle might have.

I'd propose that there might be a market for a Busse emergency/rescue type of knife. Hell, we can even have another naming contest... :D

NO need for a contest, it'll just be called the "Matteo".:)

After a year and a half of ridicule about how dumb an orange knife would be, looks like you guys are finally coming around. Well, better late than never.....

And ohhh, the sweet irony that this thread was started by Spearhead!!!:D :D :D

Jerry,

So what do you think of a hi-vis blade or handle? You mentioned a few weeks ago that you had already made some for various groups and you were going to post some pics. I know that we would all love to see them.:)

Si or No fellas??

One thing about blaze - some places have pretty strict carry laws, but there's often an exception for hunting/fishing uses. It's much easier to convince a cop that your orange knife is part of your hunting kit, especially in parts of the country where hunting is more of a hobby than a fact of life.
