RESOLVED by replacement Caribbean lock failure

V vojinovic.mladen We expect our members to be courteous to one another and use civil language. If you find something offensive, use the report button...if you cannot do so, this is not the place for you.

I am a little curious what you hoped to achieve with your e-mail. Did you expect Sal to hop in a jet and fly halfway around the world to bring you a new one?

He probably expected more, like a shipping label paid by Spyderco, which I don't expect any manufacturer would do without evaluating the said knife. However, if the lock failure was due to material defect or the likes, Spyderco should offer a replacement or full refund including his shipping fee, IMO.

I'm sure we'll take care of you. I'll let Charlynn (Customer Service) know of the incident.

I' don't think we can get a Salt to you by August 6th.

I was reasonably confident that will be the case, a replacement (and I can cover postage even) will be sufficient, after you investigate the knife of course. I would just like an explanation of what happened in addition and that's it. Thank you Sal, I am already resigned to finishing my vacation without a salt knife - it is what it is. I will send my Caribbean from home and will expect a replacement in due course at the same address.

I am sorry a small correction, a replacement lock bar (liner) would be even more perfect! I am after all "attached" to my Caribbean and the wear and tear I put on it 😄

Obviously there was some other damage done prior. Metal defect or some trauma in the past. Reminds me of when I mistreated a 1911 and a few months later when shooting it, the thumbsafety plunger tube broke off.

As for the email, if you want to talk about your emotions, seek counseling, not a knife company ; ) (i say this in good fun)

That is now my main focus and the thing I am most interested in, I can not for the life of me see how could I have caused unwarranted trauma, because as I said I have not mistreated the knife in any way. If I did cause trauma to the material it is very important for me to know how, in order not to repeat it on the next one!
I have written the mail to CS Spyderco prior to writting here and was hopping for a more personalized reply in order to gauge the probability of such failures, but the good people on the forum have resolved that question for me.
As for the emotional "support" for me it requires sharp objects, so a knife company is better than counseling 😃

The fact that Sal responds to these issues personally is testament to a man who has great passion for his products and company.

Sal and Eric are true gems of the knife community.

To the OP, I am glad there is positive progress on getting your knife repaired.
One of the reasons I’m a fan boy of Spyderco. Are there issues sometimes, sure, all companies have a few weird things happen. With the advent of social media of online forums; a one in a million issue gets blown way out of proportion. I’d wager to guess 99% of knife users in general never have any issues and never even get on any of these forums.

I’ve been collecting/buying Spyderco products since 2003 and the only issue I’ve ever had was a scale screw coming out in my pocket. I can’t even tell you how many knives that’s been in that time period. Having owned and let go of many “higher end” and more expensive knives as well in that time period that were rife with multiple QC issues, I’d say that speaks fairly well of Spyderco.

I’m sure Sal will fix you up. All the best!

Hi Sal,

Thank you again for your attention first of all, and all your and your team's efforts are greatly appreciated. I will start my journey home today and will be back home on Friday.
I will be able and will send my Caribbean to you, in compliance with the standard warranty procedure, for investigation purpose on Saturday 6th of August.
Please feel free to communicate, if my attention required, to the mail address from which I sent out to an e mail to Spyderco customer care with the subject: "Caribbean catastrophic lock failure!" on July 28th.

Best regards,
Vojinovic

Hi Voginovic,

I have been in communication with Charlynne in Customer Service and we're trying to figure out the best way to get a replacement to you.

Hi Sal,

Sorry to bother you. I went to Serbian Post, in order to send my Caribbean with the waranty form and I have been turned down and assured by the Post employees that it is not possible to send a knife outside of the country, that the customs office will simply return the knife insted of leting it pass. A similar thing happened to me with my Zippo Blu back in the day, apparently knives as weapons and butane lighters as explosive devices are not possible to ship outside of Serbia.
Being it is a Saturday, DHL Serbia, UPS Serbia and FedEx Serbia are not working (customer services offices for general public at least), so my next step is to contact DHL, UPS and FedEx come Monday and to see if they will ship it (they have their own customs services so I hope for a more sane approach from them). I will be so free as to keep you posted on the progress either here or by any communication line you wish to establish, provided you are intersted?

Maybe Spyderco would let you send back everything except the blade and receive replacement parts minus a blade? Might be worth asking whoever you're emailing with their customer service if DHL/fedex also can't do it.

Excellent idea! Thank you HJA. I have picked up a contact telephone number for customs office from Serbia Post employees (the non public one they use for communication) and I intend to discuss the matter with Customs, although in my experience they are pretty unapproachable....

Spyderco is planning on replacing the knife either way.

sal
Spyderco is the best, I know.
Thank you kindly Sal.
However there is also the question of analysis of my Caribbean that I would like performed by Spyderco.
And of course I am in no way trying to scam anyone into a new knife, in fact I would very much like my Caribbean to be fixed if possible.
And Spyderco being the best, if and when you send a replacement, if you add another Salt knife in the package (with my luck perhaps a small fixed blade?) I will be more than happy to purchase that one and pay for postage for both too?

So the country is OK for knives to be shipped in but not out? Not questioning what you're saying but just curious.

Yes, exactly, I got all mine via online buying and that's ok, but shipping them out is a no no :poop::mad:o_O
And the reasoning is it's a weapon... I started foaming at the mouth immediately arguing it's a tool not a weapon, and had to cut myself short not to look like a freak I am ;)

Hi Sal,

I have talked to UPS and FedEx and the position is the same, knives can not be shipped out of Serbia.
I have asked about HJAs idea and that seems possible, so I will probably be able to send my Caribbean if I remove the blade. Can you please arrange Charlynne to contact me directly in order to provide me with a permission to disassemble the knife and send it sans blade?
Also on my side I have been informed that I will probably need to acquire a temporary export license for which I need a little bit of time to find a contact in Serbian Customs Office and verify the need for said export license and provide it if it is truly required...
If you would like, please contact me directly in order to remove further communication from this public thread...
