RESOLVED by replacement Caribbean lock failure

Hi Vojinovic,

We have only had less than 10 Compression Locks fail since we first began making them. I have them on my desk. It was my invention so I take great interest.

I will alert Charlynne to the current situation. She is exceptional and will ship you an new knife either way. When we can figure out a way to get your knife, even without the blade is fine.

Thank you Sal, I am a fan of the Compresion lock, hence my waiting for and obtaining a Caribbean as a Salt knife.
Thank you for the interest, it just speaks of you as a proud creator and an excellent human being.
I am and will do my best to deliver my knife to you, unfortunately without the blade.
On that note is it possible to send me only the replacement lock holding liner which I could swap out and then send only the brocken one to you?
That would be a preferred solution to me, getting to keep most of My knife and a most fair to you?

I wonder if it would be possible and satisfactory to send everything but the blade(?)

Although the blade is part of the lock interface, from the pics it looks like the failure point is further back, so maybe the rest of it would be enough to find the cause of the failure

edit: beat to the punch :)

Thank you, it is a viable solution for Sal, and the only availabe to me.
The same brilliant idea was already suggests by HJA, and excepted by Sal and me

I guess (considering it is completely flat now), exactly at the point the liner curves inward to effect the locking. See pictures in link:
I know that the lock is part of the liner and that the liner is nested in the scale, my guess that it would be simple to remove the whole liner, send the brocken to you and insert a replacement liner...

Ok, that's great, thank you Sal. My guess would be that I should also have no problems in sending a liner to you.
Please tell Charlynne to contact me directly for further arrangements.

Hi Sal,

Sorry to bother you. I went to Serbian Post, in order to send my Caribbean with the waranty form and I have been turned down and assured by the Post employees that it is not possible to send a knife outside of the country, that the customs office will simply return the knife insted of leting it pass. A similar thing happened to me with my Zippo Blu back in the day, apparently knives as weapons and butane lighters as explosive devices are not possible to ship outside of Serbia.
Being it is a Saturday, DHL Serbia, UPS Serbia and FedEx Serbia are not working (customer services offices for general public at least), so my next step is to contact DHL, UPS and FedEx come Monday and to see if they will ship it (they have their own customs services so I hope for a more sane approach from them). I will be so free as to keep you posted on the progress either here or by any communication line you wish to establish, provided you are intersted?
I once dealt with a warranty issue with Streamlight where parts were being shipped from the US to Croatia. Never again, it was too difficult dealing with customs there, although Streamlight handled it great. Hope you have better luck.

Thank you, thanks to Sal we have found an alternative solution.

That would work. Charlynne could send you a new liner.

Hi Sal,

Thank you for your attention first and foremost. FYI I have finally sent out the complete knife minus the blade, Charlynn has informed me that liner only replacement is not possible due to your phenomenal CQI. I am looking forward first to the results from your lab investigation (hopefully Charlynn will share the investigation conclusion, if not I will be so free as to make an enquiry to you here) and seconldy to the replacement knife that again hopefully you will send. I have included my payment card information in the waranty forms packed with the knife handle in order to be used for shipping and handling charges.
Regards,
Mladen

Hi Sal,

FYI My knife handle has reached you, according to partial tracking info I have (tracking is not full from/in US), I have kindly asked Charlynn for confirmation a couple of times but still no reply. I remain greatly interested in your findings.

Best regards,
Mladen

Hi Mladen,

We received your knife. Sorry for all of the hassles involved. Charlynn said she's sending you a new knife. I checked the lock and it didn't look like there was anything obvious. Heat treat looked good, hinge was clean. There might have been an imperfection in the steel itself. I saw a very small depression.

We've only had 4 break of the thousands built and they looked the same as yours. I don't think it was a general problem, but more of an individual defect, probably a flaw in the steel itself. We've since made some changes with no issues for quite a while. I hope you enjoy your new knife.'

Hi Sal,

Thank you very very much, no worries about hassles, all is well that ends well.
One in a milion bad luck sounds about right with my luck, so it figures I "win" a faulty steel knife, I am certain that a replacement will be better/ flawless thanks to your world famous CQI.
It was a pleasure communicating with you. I will leave the tread open until I am able to bragg via pics of my new knife ☺️
Best regards,
Mladen

OP, glad Sal fixed you up. I think the Caribbean is Spyderco's most underrated knife, hands down. It is my go-to knife when I grab a folder I know I can fully trust and can do anything needed. Enjoy your new knife. Sal again shows why Spyderco is not only the classiest knife company, but also one of (if not the) best out there!
