Resurrecting O1 heat treat?

After the etch I rubb the knife with 0000 steel whool with wd 40 as a lube. Just focused the rubbing below the hammon then hit the whole thing once my mark is on the knife.

Dan,
Even the 10xx steels have .6 to 1.2% manganese. Even this amount can cause major changes in the effect of the temper line. Manganese is added to all modern steels because it helps the molten steel pour smoothly. As a footnote to those interested in damascus, manganese is the element most responsible for steel turning black when etched. Carbon is important too and the hardness of the steel.

Thanks Brian
I thought something like that..

I wonder why the chart don't show that?

it starts at the 13xx's at 1.75 manganese , interesting.

also to add..
O1 is made to even out it's own HT
you won't get a funky scroll type hamon with it...
Dan,
I'm a little confused about the funky scroll type hamon part. That's becuase I have seen wavy (Midare-ba) hamon on knives made with O1 by R.W. Clark.
Am I missing something?
Regards,
Greg

Dan , there are different charts so there is some confusion there . Yours doesn't have the 1500 series which is also high Mn but not as high as 1300. There are more steels in the 1500 series.

Greg do you have a picture of it? I'd like to see it.. O1 is very very hard to do that for the reasons I gave..

I'm talking about the old sword masters signatures in hamon, some were what I call funky like scroll work, it's art by it self..

Hi Dan,

I get what you mean now.

The Clark knife isn't that dramatic, but is still a nice touch. I just took a photo of it and posted it
here.

Greg

Depends on who made it [SAE or AISI] and when it was made. For a fairly up to date one see the "Practical Data Handbook" on www.timken.com .That's gives standard ,'H' steels and obsolete grades and other useful info .
