The first time I walked into Recon 1 I knew I had found the place for me...
The clerk said.."can I help you" and like the knife geek that I am I said, "Yes I'm looking for a Benchmade 903 mini stryker drop point", and instead of the expected puzzled look I would get at REI or Sport Chalet he said "straight edge or partially serrated?" and in my mind I said "Hallelujah!!! He knows what I said, I've found my knife store!"
It's a pleasure for me to stop by and spend time talking knives with "knife people" dedicated to the knife industry. Although "stopping by" tends to end with me spending more $$.
My local Ace Hardware store (~ 1 mile away) has the biggest knife collection for a store in town, and the knife section is run by a serious knife enthusiast. He's more than happy to show you and talk with knives all day. Really good selection to browse through.
Unfortunately, they run almost all of their prices at full MSRP. So I've only bought one knife from them. But since I do my other hardware shopping there, I don't feel so guilty looking at and handling their knives.
I went to the knife gallery in orange a couple months ago to buy a sharpener. It's the first time I've been in a cutlery since I became a real knife enthusiast. At first the guy treated me like one of those people that just go in there because "cool! Swords and stuff!" (He Was not rude or anything) But then once I started asking more questions, he realized I knew a little bit more, and we had a really cool conversations about knives and he showed me all the cool stuff. Even showed me how to tell fake spydercos and crks apart. Hope to go back in again soon and chat again with real knife enthusiasts. That was a pleasant experience.
The worst I've seen has to be the army navy store right down the street from me. They have a few things worth buying for me based on proximity and low price like paracord or any small stupid accessories like carabiners. Sometimes I'll check out the knife selection, and I want to puke. They've got a shit ton of garbage of course, but also medium-high end stuff like kabar, kershaw, benchmade, Spyderco, etc. The prices are ABSURD. The kabar I bought for $50 online with free shipping was $89. Spyderco sage 3 cf was damn near $250. Just ridiculous prices. They also sell illegal shit there, like daggers and other double edged knives. Those are illegal in PA. Obviously just because of pure ignorance, since they have plenty of auto knives that you're only allowed to buy if you're LE or MIL.
In PA. you are allowed to buy, and possess automatic knives. Only Law Enforcement and Active Duty Military are allowed to CARRY automatic knives.
Luckily here in SC. pretty much anything goes for knives on the state side of things. There might be county/city ordinances in areas but for the most part we're pretty lucky. Autos can be legally carried and concealed by anyone of age.Only as a "curio or collector". Really anyone can buy an auto online and get it shipped to their house without problems. You still can't buy them in a retail store as a civilian, except maybe at lesser known places or junk tables at places like Q-Mart or some gun shows. I'm quite familiar with my states laws. And in PA any local municipality can have its OWN laws regarding knives. Just like philly has BS laws saying you cant carry ANY knife of any type unless you are working at the time. So many state wide laws "don't apply" depending on what county or borough you happen to be in. How these are upheld and enforced can obviously vary. The whole situation is incredibly annoying, PA's knife laws are terribly vague and out dated. Philadelphia is by far the worst.
