how do you'all handle it when someone wants to return a knife for a refund. there was nothing wrong with the knife, there were plenty of pictures and it was decsribed clearly. it was and left handed auto and the dude didn't like that, had a hard time firing the mechanism. but he knew that upfront. I don't want to be a dick but, it doesn't seem right that I should have to refund just cause the guy doesn't like the choice he made.

thoughts?

That sucks. If the buyer knew everything upfront, acknowledged this, but just wants to return it, because he doesnt like it like he thought he would, then he should just suck it up, and re-sell it himself. However, the BF standard is no deal is done until both parties are completely happy. If it were me, Id just let him return it as long as its in the exact condition I sent it in, I would then refund him minus fee's & ALL shipping (if it was my fault Id full refund +$5 for a sry beer), then likely never sell to him again. It just isnt worth the headache, that and rising above the BS is always good for the character :D:thumbup:

If I bought a knife that I thought I would like before being able to handle it, I would hope that I would be able to return it if I didn't like the actual knife in-hand.

I've seen a few sellers here lately saying "no returns" I don't think Bladeforum's standards allows that.

Not me. I can kinda see your point if you bought it from a manufacturer direct or even a dealer that had that policy, but returning a knife for a refund to a guy just selling his own stuff because you decide it's not your taste is bad form in my opinion. I've bought a LOT of knives on a whim that showed up exactly as described, but just weren't right for me. I just relist myself and let it move on down the line. I may take a loss, but it's not the seller's fault that I didn't do my research and they shouldn't have to be bothered with it.

Arden, good on you for going ahead with the refund. That's what I would do as well, but I'd put the buyer on my PITA list and not deal with 'em again.

I know its not always possible, but its best to look at and handle in person, the knife you are looking for. That would eliminate that scenario of not liking how it feels in hand... I've bought a couple knives that were exactly as described, but really didn't care for once I got them. I didn't think that was the sellers fault, so I just sold them myself...

If the knife was misrepresented in the ad, and is not what it was described to be, thats definitely a valid reason for return, as well as negative feedback, unless the seller is more than willing to make it right. We all have lapses, and mistakes can be made, but if they are handled properly, that makes all the difference in the world

I think you are correct Jill. The BF's protocol is no deal is finished until both parties are happy. For those that don't want to conduct themselves that way when dealing here, they won't be around long

Even eBay now won't allow a seller to not accept returns. They can state "no returns" but if the buyer wants to return it, they can. I think it's a good policy, bought a knife there last summer that was said to be brand new. When it arrived it wasn't. The seller didn't want to take it back. eBay refunded my money and took it up with him.
(if I bought a knife then found I disliked it and it was as described, I wouldn't send it back, I'd just sell it, but some people will return it and that's just part of doing business)

Pretty sure there's such a thing as a reasonable inspection period. Pics don't show everything. I know I'd want to inspect the knife in my hands.

If the knife is returned because the Buyer just doesn't like it the Buyer should pay all the Sellers fees so the Seller isn't out any money.

Since the Buyer made the mistake they should shoudler the burden of added costs.

So far I haven't sold anything on the forums, but my personal policy is 100% customer satisfaction. That means if, FOR ANY REASON, my customer is unhappy, changes his mind, or whatever, he may return the item. Since I NEVER EVER ask for or accept money up front, the refund becomes a moot point. This policy has served me and my customers well for many years and I very rarely get a request for a return. I think the OP is doing the right thing by making the refund and should do so without any reservations or personal ill feelings toward the buyer. It will serve him well in the future.

You are being exceedingly accommodating in taking the return as a private seller. Very nice of you.

With a private sale like that, all details accounted and disclosed, it would be the buyer's problem to then re-sell it if they didn't like it. That's what I personally would do if I bought something I didn't like when I got it. I wouldn't even think to ask the seller to take it back.

thanks for all the feedback guys, I will clarify the buyers in the future. I don't mind so much really but I already spent the money on another knife. he he. plus it's not like there was something wrong with it, he just didn't like it.

Hopefully this is karma that will come back to me one day when the same thing happens. Although I am usually to embarassed to ask for a return and just re-list.

appreciate the opinions. . . live and learn
