*Review* My New $50 Endura Butter Knife (Extremely Dissapointed 1st Time Owner)

I would say that you should take up Sal's offer and get a SE Endura 4. Just to put it in perspective: I have cut 3/4 inch rigging rope, found at the beach, with my SE Jester so a SE Endura should handle your rope with no problems.

Really? Why is that?

You must not have seen the post where the OP (Original Poster) stated he had contacted Spyderco and that they were going to "make it right.";)

i dont read anything other than the ops main most. wish I had the time to.

Og usually with production models, they test the knives. Heat treating a knife is like baking bread. if ya use the same setup, at the same temp, you will turn out nearly the same every time. This is how subways bread is always the same, exactly the same.

Yes, my next SE will be a ZDP Endura that will have that Krein love'in. I might ask him to put a Mili like point on it also.

I would go for the splinter picker point, also. I had STR put a splinter picker point on my R2, and I like the knife much better now that it doesn't have the drop at the tip. I prefer the straight tip of my Endura 3 to the dropped point on the E4.

Hi Jtallant,

Sorry for your experience. While it is hard to imagine that one of our knives wouldn't cut the line, I guess it's possible. I'm glad Customer Service is sorting it for you. I've been out of town. I'm going to personally inspect your knife when it comes in.

Anyone that says a plain edge knife will cut line (rope) better than one of our serrated versions has, in my opoinion, very little experience with line and serrated Spyderco's. We stopped using Poly rope in our demos becaue the line seprateted so quickly, it looked like defective line.

I have experienced failure at cutting poly line with a straight razor, so "bite" is a good feature on rope.

If I'm on my boat, my knife is serrated. period.

Let me know if you want to try one with teeth in our replacement.

Hey, does this mean I get an extra serrated edge Endura as well as a strait edge repacement?:D :D :D

Ok, resharpened and tested against my Camillus Blaze. Had a stack of cardboard boxes after we took on groceries yesterday. The Blaze easily outcut the Endura. I just kept slicing and dicing as many strips as possible until the edge was too dull to shave arm air during a strope. Endura, lasted about 15min b4 no part of the edge would shave. At the same amount of time with the Blaze, it was still able to shave. Stoped after 20min and the leading edge towards the tip was still able to shave, but not the rest of the blade. Not scientific mind you, just simply playing around.

Camillus Blaze: PE AUS-8
Endura: PE VG-10

Thanks for explaining. That makes sense to me.

hey i could be wrong, I am in no way an expert. I am just pretty sure that Spyderco along with the majority of knife makers would have much more to loose than the quick gain they could get on cutting down the quality of their heat treats.

Maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time seeing how an Endura--which will shave and cut cardboard for 14 minutes and still shave--has a problem with the edge. Cardboard is pretty hard on knife edges, actually. Hard to understand why this same knife won't cut a piece of poly rope under tension.

My Heat which is the same blade shape as the Blaze will outperform my Endura all day long on cardboard. The Blaze is almost a full flat grind up to about an eighth inch of the spine. The blade's a tad thinner also. It won't however stand up to hard heavy cutting like the Endura. I don't consider poly rope especially hard but without a coarse finished edge the blade tends to glide over the strands with out biting in to start the cut. Too polished an edge and it winds up like trying to cut through a plastic cutting board. If I had to cut a lot of rope, I wouldn't consider anything but a full SE.

I am in agreement with you on that.

Troll bait. :jerkit:

Who are you referring to?

Sal, I can't mail the knife to you until this Friday, so it should be there sometime early next week. It will be sent attn: Sal Glessar. Is there anything I should know b4 sending it in as to regulations and stuff???

send it via USPS for the best results. I find sometimes fedex or UPS get cranky with knives. Unless you ship it directly from a main depot.

I would send it priority mail with insurance.

Id also like to point out that my Military does a Phenomenal job cutting bagels and spreading cream cheese onto them.

As the owner of several Spydercos reground by Tom Krein that is a great idea. Getting the Endura ZDP reground to full flat grind with a .010" edge will make for a tremendous cutter that is still durable. The ease of sharpening will also be greatly improved. I believe it was Catamount who had the pics of his Endura ZDP regrind, it would be nice to hear some of his experiences with the knife after the regrind.

hey mike do you have a pic of the R2 that str did for you. tom hasnt even started my knife yet so i would like to see what yours looks like to see if i want a different point on it. thanks

Ok Sal. I sent the knife your way today via USPS priority. Addressed to you personally as you said you wanted to inpect it yorself. I know you'll make it right.

Forgot one thing though. You suggested a serrated edge replacement, and I forgot to put the note in with the knife box asking for a foilage green FRN combo edge.

Have you guys recieved this knife yet??? Should have been there yesterday or today. Please keep me updated if at all possible Sal. Thanks.
