The NEW and IMPROVED  C07S Police Model Knife ... and I hope Sal Glesser reads this.
I've used the Spyderco Police knives for well over 20 years in extreme situations all around the world. I've used the Combo blade, the plain edge, but finally settled on the Spyder (serrated) edge CO7s. They were all great knives; both sleek and tough. Many times when I used it in the presence of others they often commented on its looks, and asked to see it. A one handed opening is easily, and quickly accomplished. So last week I ordered another one from Amazon with the intention of passing my current one on to a grandson. The new one, a Spyderco Police CO7s arrived today ... words cannot adequately express my disappointment.

Someone at Spyderco has decided that they knew how to improve upon perfection!!! Instead of drilling three holes to hold the clip they decided that it would be better if there were 12 holes drilled into the handle. That is, they drilled three holes at each end and on both sides of the handle. This someone also decided that they would use three screws (as before) to secure the clip to the handle. But the next part is what I just couldn't believe ... This nameless someone also decided that it would be OK to just leave the tapped empty holes in the handle AS IS!!! That's right, the extra and IMHO unneeded 9 holes are just left open in the handle.

One would think if they drilled the extra holes, and they knew that only three would be needed, that they would include 9 screws that would flush mount into the openings. But no this unknown Michelangelo of design decided that the appearance of this truly classic knife really didn't matter anymore. Further, I imagine IF they thought this through, it didn't matter what kind of debris would collect in these holes. To say the least I'm disappointed, and I'm returning the knife to Amazon. They have agreed to pay return shipping because the knife in their online catalog doesn't have the extra screw holes that the knife now ships with.

One last thing ... The only reason I can think of them drilling the extra holes is because of complaints from left-handers. Hmmm I'm left handed and it really never bothered me. It was just something to work through, and I did so easily!

This is the mostly the standard now. Tip up or down, left or right.
I'm a lefty. I prefer to carry tip up. I would prefer the tip down holes not be there, but overall I'm very thankful I have options beyond righty tip up. I prefer my fingers remain intact.

So the ability to carry the knife tip up, down, left, or right handed is a step backwards?

Sorry you're disappointed, but this is a design choice, not a mistake and I'll bet most of the people on here will happily sacrifice a small bit of aesthetic appreciation for the added versatility of a 4 way clip.

Lol, is this for real??

Give the new model to the grandson, he'll likely be not disappointed.

Lol, still not sure if this is real or not.

Hi Ranger,

Welcome to our forum.

Sorry for your disappointment. The Police Model was my design oroginally and I guess I'm the guy that decided to blemish the aesthetics. I must admit that the Police Model was never designed with looks in mind, only pure efficient function. The decision to add the "ugly" holes was the request of our customers over a long period of time. Yes, some do complain about the appearance, but most prefer the change. We also made a new G-10 Police model, again at the requests of customers, to which we added a finger choil and G-10 scales along with a full flat grind. Also a function driven design.

Hope you'll forgive me?

sal

On a common knife like the Police they need to accommodate everyone for their preferred carry method even though all the extra holes are an eyesore. Practicality wins!

Thank goodness there's no such accommodation in the nice collaborations like the Rubicon. Aesthetics wins!

I for one am completely pleased with the design. I have a Police G10 I enjoy so much that I decided to have it further personalized. In its vacation, I recently picked up a Police SS Spyderedge, the aforementioned C07S. The design is phenomenal, and I greatly appreciate the numerous clip carry options. For me, it only further improves upon an already incredible design, for which the aesthetics are quite stunningly classic.

One of my first Spydies was the original SS Police... fully serrated! I felt like such a bad-ass with that knife!

Now I have one of the new G-10 versions and I love the improvements... especially the choil and the ffg...

I am, and always have been, a fan of Spyderco... (at least since 1984)

Cheers!

We forgive you. :D

A G-10 Police with the original blade design would be pretty great though. :)
I like G-10 and the finger choil, but really like the original blade design.

I've used the police model for about 20 (left handed too)...... And for all sort of uses. I love the fact that one can choose between different carry options. Wouldn't change a thing. A gave my first police to a friend who was going to Kosovo on a peace keeping mission, that was back in 2000. He was not a knife guy. That knife converted him. I ordered another soon after giving him my old one.

I've got the G10, non serrated model...... With the 12 holes. Love them choils & jimping, Spyderco PERFECTION !

I'm always skeptical of a first post on any forum being a complaint.

That said, I have trouble taking this seriously.

Hmmmmmm.... Sal addressed his concerns at 3:46pm yesterday afternoon, and Ranger10 is conspicuously silent.

Some people are happiest when they're complaining about something.
