Review of the "NEW and IMPROVED" Spyderco Police CO7s

Wow. I'm surprised at all the flaming over Ranger10s opinion.

I completely agree. Not that I believe one person made the decision for the extra holes. Even though Sal stepped up I'm sure many people agreed with the decision.

The Police 3 was on my list until the extra holes appeared. That and the FFG was a deal breaker. I was going to overlook the FFG but not now.

I hope Traditional Police sprints are on the horizon.

I hope the Military isn't fazed out when the Military 2 drops. I don't even want a 2 with all the holes. I guess I'll be buying used. That's not beneficial to Spyderco.

Okay flame on. I can take it. Whose perceived IQ is going to suffer by telling me my opinion is ridiculous?

I have an older SS police before they were drilled for anything but tip down, and I can agree that it does look better, "cleaner" perhaps. I also like the military and the older Terzuola collab for this same reason.

On the one hand, you can't blame Spyderco for responding to consumer demand for more options (especially when gradual R&D/improvement is a stated principle of the company), and nobody will dispute that Spyderco chooses performance and ergonomics over pure aesthetics in many cases (which has earned them a loyal following of people who actually use knives, like the OP.) On the other hand, if you don't like the newer models of the knife, you can easily find older versions for sale online. The Police was and is a mainstay of the brand and there are oodles out there. Some people are just highly resistant to change I suppose.

I don't know any of the numbers, but I don't think tip upers and lefties make up 50% of the market. There could be sprint runs to accommodate those preferences.

I ordered another one from Amazon with the intention of passing my current one on to a grandson. The new one, a Spyderco Police CO7s arrived today ... words cannot adequately express my disappointment.

Someone at Spyderco has decided that they knew how to improve upon perfection!!! Instead of drilling three holes to hold the clip they decided that it would be better if there were 12 holes drilled into the handle. That is, they drilled three holes at each end and on both sides of the handle. This someone also decided that they would use three screws (as before) to secure the clip to the handle. But the next part is what I just couldn't believe ... This nameless someone also decided that it would be OK to just leave the tapped empty holes in the handle AS IS!!! That's right, the extra and IMHO unneeded 9 holes are just left open in the handle.

Oh the horror!

You must be new to knives.....

I don't think I have ever seen a knife with multiple clip positions where the holes were filled.

Am I the only person on the planet who has never moved a factory installed clip?

I just clip it to wherever, dependng on the clothing I wear. Tip position and side of body doesn't matter to me. It seems silly to me for it to even be an issue, but I understand the inadequacies and handicaps of others. ;):D

I'm ambidextrous anyway. ;)

My percieved IQ has reached rock bottom so I have nothing to lose. Your opinion is ridiculous. The Police is a job specific tool and as such it should be convenient for clipping from any of four positions. If empty holes concern you  then find and install nine appropriate screws.

LOL. :D

I do experience the frustration with good looking Knives coming out in tip up only. Although I don't think that's a good argument for all clip position only. Give us choice without all the ugly holes.

I understand your position. There are plenty of knives with pretty faces out there. My love of Spyderco is due to their form follows function designs. To my eye they look just fine but in actual use they shine. In my opinion their designs with flippers, recurves, assists, stylish lines, etc., are steps backwards.

The guy has a point. It's a good thing they didn't put a wire pocket clip on it or he'd have had an embolism over all those slots. That actually does bother me a bit, especially on showier knives like the Sage 4. But the holes and slots do have a very good reason for being there, so my practical side tolerates it.

I love Spyderco. It's the only brand that is exciting to browse thru. However I share Ranger10s opinion of the all position clips. The mob mentality attacking his opinion is ridiculous. It kind of feels like this forum is full of seven year olds. Berating anyone opposing the mob opinion.

Hinderer includes a clip-hole-filler. At MSRP they aren't too far off from Spyderco's spendier folders.

The issue is not that his opinion isn't valid. We all like what we like and we have every right to that. The issue is this guy joined a wonderful forum to make one salacious post bashing a well liked company, never to return. He's not in this hobby. If he was he would know that a fair amount of quality knives have a multi-position clip option. If he cared in the least about what we do here he would have seen how we discuss, debate, and research knives. If this was such an issue that he would take the time to join up and write a long post berating Spyderco he should have spent that time researching the newer version of the knife. But no. He spent only enough time on this project to look at the picture on Amazon, which admittedly is wrong. That said, if he bothered to read the description on Amazon it says it comes with a four-position hourglass clip that supports fully ambidextrous left- and right-side, tip-up or tip-down carry. Is simply looking at a picture a good way to research a product before you buy? Nope. Should you assume that a knife you bought 20 years ago will not change? Nope.

Yeah Spyderco changed his favorite design. Sorry, but you don't always get what you want in life. It is how you handle a situation like this that defines character. Look how he handled it.

Some stainless stove top screws would look nice on the stainless police. I think all he needs is the correct specs for the screws.

Ima be 7 in a couple of years. Oops. Make that 70. If I live through the horrors of all these empty holes in my Police!

I don't have holes in my Police Model because it's from 1988. Before the termites got to the spidies

Why is this labeled as a review? The only feature of the knife mentioned is the 4 way pocket clip. Most people like this feature because of the carry options it gives the user anyways
