Review Request: Wegner Mouse Knife

Hoodoo,

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by blade up, if you mean a sort of upside down saber grip the pad of my thumb is dangerously close to the edge. Looks safer in a modified hammer grip. (?)

I have a mouse and a dragonfly. Both are beautiful small knives. I think the dragonfly fits the hand better for fine work, but the mouse can be gripped more securely for heavier cutting, one of its "larger than it seems" features. I did a more detailed review and comparison of both knives some months back. Somewhere on this forum (reviews and testing) you will find it (both mouse and dragonfly are mentioned in the thread subject) if you look.

To be honest with you, I've heard the term saber grip, but I don't know what it means. I'm talking about the way you would hold a knife to gut a rabbit or a deer. With the blade up and the thumb usually parallel with the length of the knife, pointing forward toward the edge, close to the ricasso. The navigator seems to fit well this way because of the finger groove that is formed from the ricasso and anterior portion of the handle. My thumb fits well here in the blade-up position. I was wondering about the mouse.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Hoodoo,

That sounds like what I would think of as an upside down saber, and I know just what you mean with the Navigator. I just played with that grip again, and I don't like it with the Mouse. The grip does not feel secure, and the pad of my thumb is very close to the edge, and wants to slip that direction.

My inclination for gutting a deer at least would be to run my index finger down the spine of the knife all the way to the point. That way I have to full edge to work with, but have the point covered so it can't snag anything under the skin I don't want to cut.
