Revolution or Revulsion

How do you feel about the Emerson Wave? My recently ordered combat karambit is here. My first wave experience. I must say I really like it. Did I say I really like it! What is your opinion on this? Revolution or revulsion, or did I just drink the Ernie Emerson Cool-Aid? At least it was a Spyderco that cut open the box.

I love the wave. I just find I love it more on knives that are made by Spyderco or Fox than I do on Emersons.

I don't like the Wave at all, or Emersons for that matter, but all that matters is that you like it.

I think the wave has its place from a utilitarian perspective, as there may be occasions when you want a one-hand opener, but I can't imagine reliably using the wave deployment under stress. Thats just me. I have Emersons with and without the wave feature, and they are both groovy.

I like the Wave but there are few Emersons I like. The only Waved knife I currently own is a Southern Grind and I'm definately in love there.

Take a guess.

Never had an Emerson. Probably never will. Their blades are treated to be soft to prevent chipping, which means inferior edge retention, and their titanium linerlocks are said to give out after 6 months of regular use. It's not for me. I have a Spyderco Delica Wave which I like very much though. Also had an Endura Wave, which I gifted to my cousin.

How IS the Southern Grind? It seemed the materials were kind of cheap for the price and the needing special tools turned me off. I WANT to like them though, so please help! :)

The Southern Grind is great. It doesn't use some wizzbang uber steel sure, but Sandvik is good durable stuff and they heat treat it right. Other than that, what's not to like about titanium and cf? It's probably one of my favorite folders I've ever owned. It's big and it's light weight. And the tool is like $10 so not a big deal. You might think the price is high for using Sandvik but a lot of hand work goes into that knife and the fit and finish is great.

Not a wave fan, had a bad experience due to one. Haven't tried an Emerson yet but hoping to do so in the future, just wish more of their models were available without the wave.

Interested in sharing what happened?

For me the jury is out on Emerson... I do have a Combat Karambit and I like the wave on it but I am not sure I will ever get another Emerson...

I own 3 Emersons and a waved Endura.
Not for any tactical reason, but they sure are fun to play with.

As far as people complaining about the low rockwell and poor edge retention, I've been using my GJ almost exclusively at work for cutting everything to nylon reinforced rubber hose to pizza boxes and it holds an edge just fine.

You can find many pictures here with people complaining about their broken tips after they drop the knife on concrete. I did that with my Jim and the tip was only slightly damaged, took all of 5 minutes to repair it.

I'm not a fan of them. I actually just got a Mini Roadhouse yesterday and am thinking of grinding it off. I know they work well enough, but I'd actually prefer NOT to have a knife open up that quickly, as it draws unwanted attention, IMO.

I think it looks really out of place on certain knives, but I like the function of it :)

I don't have any experience with the smaller Emerson wave but my Endura Wave is quick to open and the larger wave works well for cracking a beer.

I don't know.

I have tried to get on the Emerson train. Just can't seem to warm up to them.

I've had waves from both Spyderco and Emerson. I prefer the shorter Emerson version... works better for me. That said, I don't really care about the feature one way or the other. I use the thumb disk on my mini-15 and it's really nice. I like it better than studs or holes.
