Richard Rogers: Custom Knives

Here is my first RR custom piece. I was fortunate enough to pick this lightly-used Sowbelly in shadow green G10 for a decent price. There are no filings on the springs (inside) as seen on some of Richard's pieces as I suppose the shadow pattern was meant to be a “less fancy” user. I find this Sowbelly very comfortable in hand and offers a secured fit in relationship to how my palm swells over the handle and how my fingers wrap around it. The closed length measures at 3 7/8” with a 2 ½” cutting edge on both clip and semi-skinner blade, weight is 3.2 oz. The fit and finish, walk and talk, and details to craftsmanship are what you would expect from any skilled custom knife maker would produce; with no exception, this Sowbelly indeed hits high marks on all mentioned department .. pure perfection! I am particularly fond of the sunken joints and how the swedges flow! The stonewashed blades are A-2 steel, which sharpens to a mirror-finish quickly and have great edge retention. Pins are 416SS and shield is 410SS. This Sowbelly has been a real joy to carry daily since I took ownership. Thank you Richard!

I love these stonewashed blades in this pattern. This knife is stunning. It looks like the kind of knife that you slip into your pocket one day, and after 20 years u handle t and think "hey, it's been 20 years and I still love it".
Congrats to both the maker and the new (lucky) owner.

That's a fine looking Sowbelly, seadweller. I like the stonewashed blades. Almost looks like a patina.

Hi guys,

I've been busy with ranch stuff, but did manage to get a few things done. I've been wanting to make my own jigged bone for a while, but couldn't get the dye right. Ken Erickson's bone always looks great, so I called him and he told me how it's done. Thanks Ken! :)

Here is the first knife with my jigged and dyed bone on it.

It's not perfect, but it came out pretty good.

It might be due to the fact that English is not my native language but...in my opinion..."pretty good" is some steps beyond the "awesome" that this knife deserves :)

Nicely done, Richard. And kudos, Ken, for obviously sharing your secrets well.

Nice and random, the way it should be! Nice work, RR!
Do you mind showing the knife open?

Here's a pic of it open. Please ignore the reflection of my hand in the rear bolster! :) I've got to get PhotoShop!

It's on the same frame as your harness jack.

Nice looking bone on that knife, I like jigging done with the bit at an opposing angle.
Ken.

That jigged bone jack is exquisite. Basic but elegant, what more could you ask for?

That's a nice looking jigged bone handle. The rich chocolate color is making my sweet tooth tingle. :D

Richard,

Looks good! I am glad I could "pay it forward". Ken Coats has been very open with me, sharing his knowledge base when it comes to dyeing bone.

Looks great Richard. That's the color I was
talking about as well. Very nice... Congrats!

Hi guys,

Finished a couple of the ultra-lightweight peanuts. Tried a different handle treatment this time. I sandblasted the carbon fiber handles for a textured finish. The clip point is lightly textured, but the wharncliff is really deep. I couldn't really capture it with the camera.

Nice duo! The blades look absolutely perfect --geometry, grinds, swedges and nail nicks -- on this small pattern.
