Can someone give me more information about knifemaker Rick Marchand? I address this strictly to those who buy and/or commission his work, not specifically Rick Marchand himself.
Thanks,
David

He smells funny ?

This probably belongs in The Exchange - Good Bad Ugly

You could try asking a specific question.
What is it you want to know ?

He's from Canadia I think ? And he's the guitarist for Motley Crue. :D

Nah, he's a drummer.

My knowledge is he is an ABS Apprentice, mostly forged blades(all?). Canadian,
Looks good in a Superman outfit.
Hemp wrapped blades. (I did see wood on one knife once....)Ties a mean Turkshead knot.
Does an excellent patina on his blades.
Honestly, if I didn't spend all my money on tools and materials I'd like to have one of his knives.

Tai Goo always calls him Anvil Jaw?

He seems like a good guy to me. His works seems largely geared towards survival/outdoors and is what I'd call pretty tribal in style.

Why do you ask?

Also, I'm not sure either that this is a good forum to address questions explicitly to those who buy and/or commission his work; you are more likely to get peer reviews and jokes around here.

His commitment to a quality knife, all around quality: ergonomics, style, and ability to cut and be a tough as nails tool, is excellent. I would not hesitate to buy a knife from him.

Last I saw Rick he was walking across the top of Wilson Lake in a thunderstorm on the way out to his fishing boat. He needed some fresh leaches for the walleye. Aey?

Rick is an enigma within in a mystery, within an apple pie, within a complex equation of prime numbers... Normally I wouldn't mess with him, but when there are a lot of people watching you can mess with his head. ;-)

I think it is interesting to learn more about knifemakers i am not familiar with. He seems very vocal on a lot of subjects, especially in several recent threads i have been following.

Has anyone had personal experiences using his knives- or noted prices, are they generally affordable/available?

I have had him make me a few blades and have never had any issue at all with any of them. Fine cutlery and they actually have built in MP3 players loaded with all the work of doug and bob mackenzie!

I have 2 knives from Rick. Top-notch & fairly expensive. They usually get snapped up quickly on the secondary market for close to original price which says a lot for his workmanship. Answers emails or messages promptly and gives straight forward answers. I think he is a totally reliable guy.

Here's my first knife from Rick, his "Bushkeeper Tanto", 14 1/4" OAL with a superb horsehide sheath also made by Rick. If you read the entire thread linked to by thegeek in post 2above, Rick's knife won "The Camp Knife Challenge" in which there were many fine knives. This thread is also the most comprehensive extensive testing i've ever read, awesome really.

He may not be pretty, but his knives sure are. From the one knife I've sampled he pays serious attention to detail and quality.

...noted prices, are they generally affordable...

Never bought one but from his website:

"Pricing is strongly dependent upon the complexity, size and materials of a given project. However, there are basic guidelines you can follow to get a general figure for the cost of an item.

Knives start at approximately $35 dollars per inch, measured from the overall length of the knife."

I sure hope you buy one. I would if, like Brian, I did not spent all my money on this darn hobby. :(;)

You guys are awesome! Thanks for starting this thread 2knife... I never knew Sam liked me.

Seriously, you guys flatter me too much. I learned much of what I know from folks a lot smarter than me and the rest from very convincing fools. Questions are always welcome. All aspects of my work are wide open for inquiring minds. I do get vocal about many subjects as I am very passionate about knifemaking.... though, you will find that I am quick to admit when I have been mistaken or unfair in my judgement. I get put in my place all the time.... that's how you grow as a maker.

and..... I do look damn good in blue tights!

My site is about 4-5months behind, forgive me.

One other thing that seems to have been forgotten in this thread:

Rick has a...well, he calls it a "happiness" guarantee on hie knives and sheaths, and thereby always guarantees a "happy ending". ;):p What that means is that if the buyer is simply not happy for any reason with his knife from Rick, then Rick will take it back. I believe this guarantee extends to secondary buyers as well. That said, I have never heard of someone being unhappy with one of Rick's knives and, while it is only a guess, I would be very surprised if anyone has ever taken Rick up on his "happiness" guarantee. It's just another thing that sets him apart from the crowd.

He may not be pretty, but his knives sure are. From the one knife I've sampled he pays serious attention to detail and quality.

Why, Rick could use this as his sig line!

It pretty much says it all. You want a fine, custom knife? You can definitely get one from Rick.

Now that he fixed his avatar i remember seeing him in vegas. His knives were all sold out by the time i got to his table so i wouldn't know about them really, seemed everyone else was in a hurry to get them first.

Rick makes a very good knife. I have two of his and am trying to get him to make me a third. Can't say more than that, can you?
